MOAA presents condolences to the South African community

dvgdg

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid campaigner and former wife of the late President Nelson Mandela  has died at age 81.

The family said in a statement that she passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year.

"Mrs. Madikizela-Mandela was one of the greatest icons of the struggle against apartheid," the statement said. "She fought valiantly against the apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country."

Her death came as a shock. "None of us had predicted this," a family spokesman told CNN.

Madikizela-Mandela was known as the "Mother of the Nation" because of her struggle against white-minority rule in South Africa.

African Community Grant - Success Story:

The Hepatitis B Initiative of Washington, DC

dagadg

Hepatitis B Initiative of Washington, DC has enhanced outreach efforts in Washington DC African immigrant communities throughout 2017 and 2018 as a result of a ten thousand dollars ($ 10,000.00) funding from the Mayor’s Office of African Affairs (MOAA), HBI –DC successfully screened five hundred and sixteen (516) African immigrants from; Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and many others. In total, we have reached individuals from twenty two (22) different countries. We take pride in helping connect individuals to linguistic and appropriate care if diagnosed with hepatitis B or C.

52-year-old Nigerian DC resident was a testament to this; as she braved frigid weather to attend a screening event. She said, “I was determined to attend the screening event, even though the weather is not good today.” We were so grateful that she attended as a result of our flyers and outreach efforts. After screening her, she tested positive for Hepatitis B.

Because she did not have health insurance; we successfully linked her for treatment to a University of Maryland treatment facility where she started treatment in February 22, 2018. Our work would not be possible without support from funders like the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs.

 DC Emancipation Day 2018

ccc

Please join Mayor Muriel Bowser at the 2018 DC Emancipation Day Parade, Concert, and Fireworks on Saturday, April 14, 2018, 2:00pm – 8:45pm.

The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 ended slavery in Washington, DC, freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned them and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16, DC Emancipation Day.

  Pledge to #SaveDCTAGSaveDCTAG

ddd

MOAA calls on its community members to support the Mayor's fight to save the DC Tuition Assistance Grant program (DCTAG), a program that has helped 26,000 students attend and get through college. Today, President Trump released a budget proposal for 2019 that completely eliminates DCTAG. This is grave news for DC. It means that a college education for thousands of DC students is at risk. Congress can and should reject this proposal and fully fund DCTAG for 2019 and beyond.

Please help us save DCTAG by signing the #SaveDCTAG petition Here

Africa Is Calling : A Guinean Social Activist Binta Terrier Says Her Energy Initiative May Be The Answer

y

Nine Days before the world celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Organization of the African Union (now African Union) by 32 African leaders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on May, 24, 1963, Little Ethiopia received an invitation to attend a presentation of Dr. Komp on the solar energy prospect for Africa, and how Africans can do it themselves. The organizer was a Guinean social activists Binta Terrier who founded a non-profit organization known as Partnership League for African Development (PLAD ) who has now partnered with Youth human Rights International ( YHRI ) and others to produce a Documentary Movie in mid-April.

PLAD’s energy initiative springs from the fact that:

1. Learning from experiences of western and energy independent countries, no nation can achieve social and economic development without sustained sources of energy.

 2. Transferring energy technologies to Africans will give them the capacity to independently generate and meet their energy needs on the continent, and thus, light the light the path to inclusive social and economic growth in Africa.
