Letter
from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
On February 12, the Trump Administration
released its 2019 budget proposal. Among the many problematic cuts in
the budget is the elimination of funding for the DC Tuition Assistance
Grant (DCTAG) program.
For nearly two decades, both Democrats
and Republicans in Congress have supported this one-of-a-kind program that
expands educational opportunities for college-bound Washingtonians by providing
grants of up to $10,000 toward tuition. Over the years, more than 26,000 young
people have benefited from DCTAG, with the vast majority of those students
coming from families with annual incomes of less than $30,000.
In 2018, when the cost of college is at
an all-time high, it is unfathomable that any leader would propose eliminating
a program like DCTAG rather than expanding it. To reduce inequality and create
more pathways to the middle class for our young people and their families, we
must continue to open doors of opportunity. We must continue to fund programs
like DCTAG.
Join me in calling on Congress to approve
this investment in higher education for DC students by signing our petition at savedctag.dc.gov,
and then ask your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same.
Sincerely,
Mayor Bowser and Deputy Mayor for
Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner invite you to attend the Fourth
Annual March Madness on March 27 for a preview of new and upcoming projects
soon to be available to the District’s development community. At the event,
attendees will learn about solicitation opportunities and network with public
and private sector development partners.
March Madness will be held at The Anthem
(901 Wharf Street, SW) from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. RSVP is required.
This week’s District Minute features stories about the
launch of Crime Cards and the grand opening of the
new DC Infrastructure Academy.

On April 20, 2018, DC Law Students in Court and the Mayor's Office of Returning Citizens will host an expungement clinic at the Department of Employment Services.
HOW THE CLINIC WORKS
The clinic provides free eligibility determinations and representation for indigent participants in Washington, D.C. who have a criminal arrest, charge, or conviction that they wish to seal.
Attorneys hold intakes to determine the participant’s record sealing eligibility. If the case is determined eligible, we will connect participants with an attorney who will represent the client by filing a motion with the court and handling any hearings or opposition motions that may occur as a result. An attorney will follow the case through resolution.
Clients are encouraged to bring their government-issued I.D. and paperwork to the intake. If they do not have their paperwork, we will give instructions for obtaining their criminal record.
