Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Next week, on Thursday, March 15, I will deliver my fourth State of the District Address. Each year, the State of the District is an opportunity to come together as a community, take stock of our progress, and set forth a vision for the future.

At last year's State of the District, I was proud to announce that DC Government would be partnering with UDC, WMATA, DC Water, leading infrastructure companies like Washington Gas and Pepco, labor unions, and trade associations to create the DC Infrastructure Academy. This coming Monday, we will celebrate the Academy's grand opening

Modeled after similar and successful programs across the country, the DC Infrastructure Academy will bring high-quality, specialized utility, transportation, logistics, and energy efficiency training under one roof. The infrastructure industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the country, and in 2016, half of DC’s open infrastructure jobs went unfilled. The DC Infrastructure Academy will give DC residents the chance to learn the nuts and bolts of what makes our city run—everything from utilities to transportation and logistics to operations and green technologies—and ensure that Washingtonians are first in line when it comes to securing the infrastructure jobs of today and tomorrow.

The DC Infrastructure Academy is good news for our city and just one example of how we are being intentional about creating opportunities that match the needs of Washingtonians. In fact, just this week, we announced that for the fourth year in a row, Washington, DC has been named the number one city for women in techBy working together, we are making progress that we can be proud of, and at next week's State of the District, I look forward to outlining the work still left to do.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
