The Community Builders -- Community Life Staff Coming on Site
New faces will be seen at Park Morton as The Community Builders' Community Life team (TCB-CL) begins outreach efforts. TCB-CL, whose office will be at 611 Morton Street, Apartment #11, will focus initially on surveying residents to determine their relocation preference and to assess what support individuals and families may need in order to have a successful transition. Residents have the option to relocate to the new Bruce Monroe homes, utilize vouchers (pending eligibility), relocate to other public housing properties, explore homeownership options, or move into the incoming Park Morton redeveloped units. An introductory meeting is being planned for residents and will be announced by flyer and email so stay tuned!
District Selects Park Designer for Bruce Monroe Permanent Park
BELL Architects has been selected to lead the design of the park that will front Georgia Avenue and Columbia Road NW. The chosen team also includes the Landscape Architecture Bureau and Wiles Mensch Corporation. A key factor in BELL's selection was their experience and qualifications leading comprehensive community design. Accordingly, BELL believes that community engagement is the key to a successful project and community satisfaction. Their project team has experience leading interactive community meetings to gain feedback to incorporate into the design. The first community-wide meeting is being planned for March 2018 and will be announced broadly.

NeighborUp Park View Continues
The community in Park View had another successful NeighborUp Night at the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center on the evening of Wednesday, January 17th. Nearly 50 people came out to this monthly event to learn what it means to "Neighbor Up", meet with neighbors and friends, discuss issues of concern in the community, and exchange small favors as a way to spark relationship-building.
If you ever spot somebody in our blue "Neighbor Up" shirts in the neighborhood, it likely means a pop up is happening! On Wednesday, February 7th, the Neighbor Up team held a pop-up at the Colony Club on Georgia Avenue. They met with residents and community members over coffee and drinks to discuss ways to create and sustain an inclusive Park View community. Human Capital Provider Spotlight
Youth Development - Dance Institute of Washington (DIW)
DIW’s 25 participants from Park Morton performed in the annual Spirit of Kwanzaa show at THEARC. The show was held December 16-18, 2017. DIW was delighted to entertain several Park Morton families in addition to the DC community at-large. This was a great and successful cultural arts production--celebrating the principles of Kwanzaa through dance, poetry, music and more. It gave participants a chance to perform and learn at the same time, as they worked with professional artists throughout the program. Dancers were able to train with professional guest artists and showcase their talents. Participants also learned about the meaning of Kwanzaa and how it could relate to their current lives and families.
DIW hosted a recruitment session on the Park Morton property in the local community room on December 22, 2017. Light refreshments were served and residents were able to fill out registration forms for the 2018 program onsite. Parents were able to discuss with DIW faculty and staff the areas of need for their children and families and learn how DIW could design the program to meet their needs. This was a very successful event as DIW now has a total of 19 new enrollees ready to participate.
