Washington, DC Picked as a Top City in Age-Friendly Policies
On Thursday, November 16, 2017, Mayor Muriel Bowser accepted an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) and AARP, recognizing the release of the city’s rigorous, metric-driven five-year Age-Friendly City progress report. Washington, DC is one of a handful of cities worldwide to receive this level of recognition as an Age-Friendly City. The Mayor was joined by Dr. John Beard, Director of Aging and Life Course Development at the World Health Organization, and representatives from the national and DC chapters of AARP.
“As our neighborhoods continue to thrive and our city continues to grow, the Age-Friendly DC initiative has brought our community together and helped us build a safer, stronger city for residents of every age,” said Mayor Bowser. “My Administration is committed to ensuring Washington, DC remains a city where residents of every age – whether they’re 100 days old or 100 years old – can live and thrive.”
In the past decade, the number of Washingtonians over the age of 60 has grown by nearly 15,000, and this population is expected to continue growing.

discuss concerns around the current federal tax reform bills.

These Young African Visionaries Made Forbes' 30 Under 30 List
Forbes Magazine just released its 30 Under 30 List 2018, and some of our favorite young African talents made the cut.
The list, which the magazine calls an "annual encyclopedia of creative disruption," features young folks making waves in a number of industries, including tech, commerce, media, art, food, policy, entertainment and more.
Forbes detailed their tedious selection process:
"Selecting these youthful visionaries is a year-round obsession: We vet thousands of nominations, leaning on the collective wisdom of our online community, ace reporters and a panel of A-list judges. Now in our seventh year, with a 4,000-strong alumni network that spans the globe, this list continues to spotlight the impressive, the inspiring and the (genuinely) enviable."
Some of this year's standouts include 17-year-old Ugandan actress and star of Queen of Katwe Madina Nalwanga, 23-year-old Ghanaian actor and model Kofi Siriboe, 29-year-old Rwandan refugee and energy CEO Robert Kabera, 29-year-old Ethiopian legal fellow Tsion Gurmu, 22-year-old Nigerian engineer Iyore Olaye, Ethiopian Senior Editor at Huffington Post Black Voices, 26 year-old Lilly Workneh and more.
