NCI Holds Briefing Before Zoning Hearings

The New Communities Initiative (NCI), the Office of Planning (OP) and developers of both Providence Place and Strand Development held an information session for both projects in advance of the DC Zoning Commission’s hearings. Zoning Commission Votes in Favor of Providence Place PUD

The DC Zoning Commission met on October 19th and voted in support of the Planned Unit Development (PUD) application for Providence Place. This PUD proposed to bring 100 affordable units (including 35 replacement units for Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings) to the Deanwood community. The Commission will take its second and final vote on November 27th. Click below for a video and transcript of the PUD hearing.

Neighbors Discuss Community Growth – Over Coffee!

On October 15th, NCI partnered with local Ward 7-based business, Penny Brew Coffee, for a pop-up event entitled “Coffee and Conversation”, at the Riverside Center in Deanwood. Discussions and ideas touched on topics such as creating a central vending point for the multiple community gardens in the area and the need for more healthcare access. There was great tasting coffee and food available as well! NCI is looking forward to more conversations with neighbors at the Penny Brew pop-up again in the near future, so stay tuned. In the meantime, follow us on social media to keep track of when our next pop-up event will be!

Deanwood Hills Development to be Completed Spring 2018

NCI Project Manager Lee Goldstein recently checked in on the construction progress at 5201 Hayes Street, NE – Deanwood Hills. This “build first” project is one of several in the NCI pipeline for Deanwood, which includes the Strand Theatre, Providence Place, and the Deanwood Town Center. These developments will provide 50 new, quality homes in the neighborhood for residents of Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings. Additionally, 100 other affordable units will be built. Construction on the entire 150-unit building is expected to be completed by the end of Spring 2018.

Deanwood Town Center Proposed

NCI development partners, the NHP Foundation and The Warrenton Group, filed a Planned Unit Development (PUD) application with the DC Zoning Commission for the proposed Deanwood Town Center, projected to bring 183 units (including 61 replacement units for Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings and 104 other affordable units) as well as 16,000 square feet of retail to the Deanwood community. Together, the Deanwood Town Center and the Strand Development fulfill the “town center” concept envisioned for the corner of Nannie Helen Burroughs and Division Avenue in the original 2006 Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings redevelopment plan.
