MOAA's Third Annual Young
African ConneXions Summit (YAX) and Mandela Day of Service
As part of its Community and Youth Engagement Outreach program, the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA) invites you to attend its third annual Young African ConneXions Summit (YAX) in partnership with Howard University on Friday, July 14, 2017.Themed Strengthening Diaspora Partnerships, the summit will take place at the Howard University School of Business Auditorium located at 2600 6th Street, NW, from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
Following the annual Young African ConneXions Summit, MOAA will host its third annual Mandela Day of Service on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Please join MOAA's staff and volunteers at the Anacostia Park skating rink on 1800 Anacostia Drive, SE, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, for 67 minutes of community service to commemorate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
Both events are free and open to the public.

Mayor Bowser Announces Green Financing Deal with DC United
On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, Mayor Bowser and DC
United announced a $25 million private clean energy financing deal for the
installation of state-of-the-art energy and water efficiency measures, an 884
KW solar array, and stormwater retention systems at DC United’s 20,000-seat
Audi Field soccer stadium. The measures are being funded through the Department
of Energy and Environment’s Property Assessed Clean Energy (DC PACE) program,
DC’s innovative green financing solution, which operates through a
public-private partnership, allowing local lenders to fund environmentally
beneficial projects at no cost to taxpayers. This deal, done through a
relationship with locally-based EagleBank, marks the nation’s largest single
PACE note issued to date, and the first issued for a stadium project.

Mayor
Bowser Highlights Administration’s Efforts to Prevent New Cases of HIV
On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, on National
HIV Testing Day, Mayor Bowser released the District’s HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD,
and TB Administration (HAHSTA) annual report and highlighted DC’s progress
towards ending the HIV epidemic in Washington, DC. The report shows that for the
ninth year in a row, the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in Washington, DC
decreased. The Mayor was joined at the release by the Director of the
Department of Health LaQuandra Nesbitt, Executive Director of Whitman-Walker
Health Don Blanchon, and community members.
“For nine consecutive years,
the District has been able to work together with the community to decrease the
number of new HIV cases. We know we have more work to do, but this data is good
news for our city and our residents,” said Mayor
Bowser.

Mayor Bowser Kicks Off 2017 Mayor
Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment, Celebrates Program’s Permanent
Expansion
On Monday,
June 26, 2017, Mayor Bowser celebrated the first day of the Mayor Marion S.
Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) by announcing a new scholarship
program for MBSYEP participants. MBSYEP is in its 38th year, and today, nearly
13,000 participants ages 14 to 24 are beginning their summer work experience at
more than 800 private sector and government worksites across Washington, DC.
“Connecting our
young people to good-paying jobs is critical to setting them up for success and
expanding prosperity in DC,”
said Mayor Bowser. “For many young Washingtonians, MBSYEP is their entry into the
workforce and a first step on a pathway to the middle class. We are proud to
have permanently expanded this opportunity to thousands more young people in
Washington, DC.”

Washington, DC Number One on
EPA’s 2017 Top Cities List
On Monday,
June 26, 2017, Mayor Bowser and the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE)
announced that for the third year in a row, Washington, DC has earned the
number one ranking on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) annual
list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the most ENERGY STAR® certified buildings.
“Washington, DC is
honored to top EPA’s 2017 Top Cities list,” said Mayor Bowser. “We
continue to be a national leader in energy efficiency and green building, and
these efforts by the private sector are critical to achieving our Sustainable
DC goals. Washington, DC is committed to being a leader on issues related to
climate change, and we will continue taking steps to lower our energy costs
while building more sustainable and resilient neighborhoods.”

Six African
Players Were Drafted Into the NBA
The 2017 NBA draft took place last night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn,
New York. Standout players from college basketball teams and international
divisions—60 in total—were given the opportunity to join the pros in hopes of
becoming future NBA stars. A number of African athletes were present for the
affair and a total of six players—five from Nigeria and one from Rwanda—will be
added to team rosters this upcoming season. See all of the African players

An Ethiopian-American Silicon Valley Star Just Raised 1.5 million in Seed Funding.
On Stackshare, Airbnb lists

SBRC One-on-One Session: Basic Steps to
Obtaining a Business License
The Department of Consumer
and Regulatory Affairs is hosting a One-on-One Session on Basic Steps to Obtaining a Business License.
During this session, the
DCRA Small Business Resource Center (SBRC) staff will provide one-on-one
assistance on navigating through the regulatory process. Attendees will gain
in-depth knowledge of registering with corporations (i.e. Limited Liability
Company, Corporations, Non-Profit, etc.) along with the basic steps of obtaining
a business license.
Additionally,
participants will receive assistance with the zoning application process (i.e.
Certificate of Occupancy and or Home Occupancy Permit).This opportunity is
geared towards future and current business owners looking to conduct business
in the District of Columbia.

Introduction to Proposal Writing
The Foundation Center is offering courses on introduction to proposal

DCCAH Community Initiated Project Grant Seeking a DC-based
Mural Artist
The
DC
Commission on the Arts and Humanities
(CAH) in partnership with MidCity Development (MidCity) seeks a DC-based mural
artist to design, create and install a temporary surface mural on the concrete
plaza of RIA Event Space that will be activated through multiple public events
and community programs. The mural is intended to inspire the surrounding
Brentwood and Brookland neighborhoods.
Project
Goals:
•To
activate and enliven the RIA Event Space off Rhode Island Ave and Montana Ave
NE.
•Create
a vibrant ground mural on the plaza surface to contribute to an inviting event
space.
•Engage
the community neighborhood residents in the conceptualization of a community
mural.
This
opportunity is open to District of
Columbia (DC) based artists over the age of 18 who can demonstrate
residency in Washington, DC.

DCCAH FY18 District Arts
and Humanities Initiative: Field Trip Experiences (FTE) Grant Program
The DC Commission on the Arts and
Humanities (CAH) is now accepting applications for the
District Arts and Humanities Initiative: Field Trip Experiences (FTE) Grant
Program for FY 2018. Grants will be awarded to support non-profit, 501(c)(3)
tax exempt, arts and humanities organizations offering comprehensive field trip
experiences for students in the District of Columbia's public schools.
Funding may be used to support the cost of
field trip tickets, associated transportation costs, professional development
opportunities for classroom educators, and/or pre/post-field trip workshops for
students. Funding may also be allocated to necessary personnel support for the
planning and implementation of the program.
Organizations
may apply for up to $75,000.
The deadline to apply is Friday, July 21,
2017 at 4:00pm
