Dear Washingtonians,
Over the past two years, my Administration has been focused on building a healthier, greener and more sustainable Washington, DC. We believe that nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our residents, which is why my Administration made all District fitness centers free for DC residents. It is also why we continue to expand access to world-class recreation centers and playgrounds, and why we are making investments that will ensure more students in our public schools have the opportunity to participate in sports.
We also recognize that when it comes to protecting our environment and creating a more sustainable city, all Washingtonians have a role to play. To help make this point, I have spent the past several weeks participating in and highlighting National Bike Month. Last week, I kicked off Bike to School Day with students from more than a dozen schools at Lincoln Park. On Sunday, I joined hundreds of other DC residents - young and old - for the 20 mile DC Bike Ride. And tomorrow, after my team celebrates National Physical Fitness and Sports Month with the November Project, I will celebrate Bike to Work Day.
While there is still more work to do, we have come a long way in building a more bike-friendly DC. Today, we have 145 miles of bikes lanes and trails. Last fall, we completed the Kenilworth section of the Anacostia Trail, and this summer, we will open the Klingle Valley Trail in Northwest. Over the past year, Capital Bikeshare added 25 new bikeshare stations; over three million bikeshare trips were taken throughout the District; and, through the Community Partners program, more residents gained access to Capital Bikeshare.
Whether it's through participating in our new Food Waste Drop-Off program, learning a new sport with the Department of Parks and Recreation, or biking to school or work, there are many ways to help DC become a healthier, greener and more sustainable city. Learn more at sustainabledc.org.

This Saturday, the Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE) is hosting Family and Youth Casting Call, the annual free event where Washingtonians young and old can learn to fish. Families can bring their own fishing equipment or youth may use the spin casting equipment provided by DOEE. DOEE also supplies bait and organizes volunteer fishing instructors to help participants learn the basics of fishing in a fun, supportive setting.

Registration for the Department of Parks and Recreation's (DPR) summer programming is currently open. DPR offers a variety of programs and activities for all ages including: sports programs, swim classes for adults and children, fitness programs such as aerobics and Zumba, and a variety of other enrichment programs for teens and seniors.

This Saturday, as part of innoMAYtion, the Bowser Administration and The Washington Post are bringing together civic hackers, entrepreneurs, students, and community members to focus on the advancement of women and youth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and entrepreneurship. There are still four free Animal Health Fairs left in May and June! These fairs offer free onsite vaccinations for dogs and cats of District residents; opportunities to obtain dog licenses; and the chance to learn more about DC animal laws and to speak with veterinarians about your pet’s health.

 The Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for highly skilled lifeguards for the 2017 summer season! Those interested in becoming lifeguards can register for the International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP). DPR offers ILTP courses between December and June at multiple facilities across Washington, DC. Candidates must successfully pass the written exam, demonstrate skill competency to the instructor during practical scenarios, and attend all scheduled class sessions.
