Housing Vouchers For
Homeless LGBTQ Seniors
Mayor Bowser Delivering Remarks at Mary's House for Older Adults in September 2014
Over the past two years, Mayor Bowser has focused our efforts
on her goal of ending homelessness as we know it in the District of
Columbia. We know that upwards of half
of all homeless youth in our city identify as LGBTQ but homelessness impacts
all demographics within the LGBTQ community.
Homelessness and housing insecurity among LGBTQ seniors is often
overlooked and under-reported. Several
factors impacting LGBTQ elders put them at elevated risk of being forced into
isolation, hostile living environments, or even homelessness.
In partnership with the DC Housing
Authority through the Local Rent
Supplement Program (LRSP), the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs is making up to
10 rental assistance vouchers available for LGBTQ seniors in the District. These vouchers will cover a significant
portion, if not all, of the cost of rent for persons 62 years or older and who
are currently homeless.
Mary’s House for Older Adults has been
a leader in raising awareness about the challenges that many older LGBTQ adults
face and key source of referrals for this housing program.
If you know someone
who may be eligible for a voucher please contact Leandrea Gilliam, LGBTQ Housing Specialist, (leandrea.gilliam@dc.gov) for more information.
