MOAA's African Community Workforce Development Initiative
The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs invites you to apply to the African Community Workforce Development program.
Recognizing the particularity of the multiple hurdles faced by the community to secure employment such as language and culture barriers, and credential-challenges. In order to alleviate hurdles related to language, culture,
credential-recognition, and other barriers that job seeking immigrant
face, MOAA plans to host a workforce development program which will
provide four consecutive job readiness workshops that will culminate in a
job fair in May 2017.
The workshops will be held from Wednesday, April 19, 2017 until Thursday, May 11, 2017

MOAA Invites You to Join Mayor Bowser at Emancipation Day Parade
The Mayor’s Office on
African Affairs (MOAA) invites you to
come walk with Mayor Muriel Bowser and celebrate DC values at our own
Emancipation Day Parade. As you know, Emancipation Day commemorates that
historic day when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation
Act, freeing 3,185 enslaved persons in Washington, DC. The parade will showcase
local bands and champions of DC Values.

The
African Union Ambassador to the U.S. Visits MOAA
On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Dr. Arikana Chihombori Quao, the
African Union Ambassador to the United States visited the Mayor’s Office on
African Affairs (MOAA) and attended the monthly meeting of the Commission on
African Affairs (COAA).
MOAA’s 10th Year Anniversary Celebration Video
On September 27, 2016 the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA) celebrated its 10th Year Anniversary themed: A Decade of Service to the District’s African Community. The event commemorated September as African Heritage Month, and featured traditional African dance performances and music. Mayor Muriel Bowser delivered the keynote speech and presented awards to community leaders that have strongly contributed to the socio-economic vitality of the African community in the District.

Mayor Bowser Highlights Increased
Investment In Affordable Child Care
On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Mayor Muriel Bowser
highlighted her Administration’s proposed budget investment of $15.3 million to
increase access to infant and toddler childcare options during a tour of the
U.S. Kids Child Development Center. Mayor Bowser’s visit comes a day after she
proposed an increased investment in toddler and childcare options to the DC
City Council through the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget

2018 Budget Proposal
On Tuesday, April 4, 2017, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented “DC Values in Action,” DC Fiscal
Year 2018 (FY2018) Budget and Financial Plan, to DC Council. As the
twenty-second consecutive balanced budget, this proposal will help ensure that
every single resident has a roadmap to inclusive prosperity. For the third
consecutive year, Mayor Bowser hosted a series of budget engagement forums to
hear directly from residents about their ideas and concerns about education,
public safety, affordable housing, jobs, economic development, health, and
human services.

Mayor Bowser Kicks Off Ninth
Annual Potholepalooza
On Monday, April 3, 2017, Mayor Muriel Bowser
kicked off the ninth annual Potholepalooza – a month-long campaign led by DC
Department of Transportation (DDOT) to accelerate pothole repairs across
Washington, DC. “Today (April 3), we are taking an even more aggressive and efficient approach to
repairing potholes throughout the city,” said Mayor Bowser. “In a
thriving city like Washington, DC, residents and visitors should expect roads
that are in good conditions. Potholepalooza is one way our city can deliver
more safe and reliable roads to residents in all eight wards.”

Kelechi
Anyadiegwu, the New Jersey-raised daughter of two Nigerian immigrants shares how she grew her marketplace for African fashion known as Zuvaa, from a passion project into a vibrant,
multi-million dollar business. In 2013, Kelechi Anyadiegwu started a business with $500 — basically
the cost of putting together a website and registering the company. She was 24
and a Master’s student at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, studying Human
Computer Interaction. Three years later, the startup generates $2 million in
revenue and has five full-time hires.

Introduction
to Proposal Writing
The Foundation
Center- Washington DC is offering a course on Introduction to proposal
writing. This class will provide
participants with an overview of how to write a standard project proposal to a
foundation. It will include: The basic elements of a proposal; the “do’s” and
“don’ts” of writing and submitting a proposal; how to follow up whether the
