MOAA Joined Mayor Bowser in Awarding the First Immigrant Justice Legal Services Grant
On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, MOAA's Director Mamadou Samba
joined Mayor Muriel Bowser and other DC officials in awarding the first
Immigrant Justice Legal Services Grant. In participating in the US Conference of
Mayors' Cities Day of Immigration Action, Mayor Bowser announced that her administration will extend Immigrant Justice Legal Services (IJLS) grant
funding to ten organizations in Washington, DC. In January, Mayor Bowser
announced that the DC Government would provide up to $500,000 to
community-based organizations, private organizations, associations, and law
firms that do legal work for immigrants in Washington, DC.

Bowser Introduces Legislation to Restore the Civil Rights of Residents with
Intellectual Disabilities
On Thursday, March 23, 2017, Mayor Bowser has
reintroduced legislation to the DC Council to restore the civil rights of DC
residents with intellectual disabilities. The Citizens with Intellectual
Disabilities Civil Rights Restoration Act will put Washington, DC in line with
national best practice by eliminating civil commitment as a condition for
providing residential services to residents with intellectual disabilities.

History was made at Johns
Hopkins University on Friday, March 17th, 2017 as Ghanaian, Nancy Abu-Bonsrah,
became the first Black female resident neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins
Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This news came on a day which is also
known as Match Day, a day that medical students around the country find out
which hospitals they’ll practice their residency.

Exchange Program Builds Ties
Between US and Africa
President Barack Obama is welcomed by the Young African Leaders Initiative in Washington, August 2016
The
United States is working with a non-profit group to send 26 Americans to Africa
to teach and connect them with locals in teh continent. The U.S. State Department’s Reciprocal
Exchange program is part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African
Leaders. It was started in 2014 by then President Barack Obama as part of his
Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).
The YALI Fellowship provides up to 1,000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home. Institutes focus on leadership and skills development in one of three tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management.

Muriel Bowser wants to give you the skills you need to help save lives. This is
why the District
of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS) is offering a number of free classes on the
basics of hands-only CPR and AED awareness. Attendees take part in a 20 minutes
training to learn hands-only CPR, a technique that uses chest compressions
without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
