Director Samba Named Advocate of the Year Award at the 2016 Applause Africa Ceremony
On Saturday, December 3rd, 2016, Mamadou Samba, Director of the Mayor's Office of African Affairs (MOAA), received the Advocate of the Year Award at the 2016 Applause Africa ceremony. Over the past ten years, Applause Africa has honored Africans in the Diaspora who have made a positive difference in improving the lives of African communities locally and internationally. Director Samba was recognized as a notable African leader who advocates for over 18,000 African residents in Washington DC. In his acceptance speech, Director Samba thanked Mayor Bowser, the entire Mayor's Office on African Affairs team, and dedicated the award to the
memory of the late Malick Diagne, a community advocate who lived in the DMV area and served as an inspiration.

The DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs met with MPD's Interim Chief Newsham
The DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA) participated
in a community meeting initiated by Interim Chief of Police Newsham and his team on Thursday,
December 1, 2016, at headquarters. The meeting, which included community representatives from each of the Special
Liaison Divisions, was held to discuss how the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) can
best work together with diverse communities in DC and support DC residents at a time when there is a high level of anxiety and uncertainty.
Readout of Mayor Bowser’s Meeting with President-Elect Donald Trump
On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, Mayor
Muriel Bowser held her first meeting with President-Elect Donald Trump to
discuss key issues facing the nation’s capital. At the Mayor’s request,
President-Elect Trump agreed to have a face-to-face meeting and begin a
constructive dialogue on how his administration can partner with the District
to advance Washington, DC’s growth over the next four years.
“Today, I met with the President-Elect to lay out the concerns and hopes of District residents and to start a dialogue with the new Administration as it is forming” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. Among
major issues discussed were education, transportation and the District’s unique

Mayor Bowser Joins 3,000 District
Seniors to Celebrate the Annual Senior Holiday Event
On Thursday, December 8, 2016, Mayor Muriel Bowser reaffirmed her commitment to making Washington, DC
an inclusive, age-friendly city for all residents, specifically for seniors
living in the District at the Annual Senior Holiday Celebration. The annual
event attracted over 3,000 District seniors, ages 60+, and exhibitors from more

Bowser Breaks Ground on McMillan Redevelopment in Ward 5
On Wednesday, December 7, 2016,
Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, and Deputy Mayor for
Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Brian Kenner broke ground on the McMillan
Sand Filtration Site,
a 25-acre development located at North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue, NW
in Ward 5. The transformative project is expected to create 6,200 jobs and 134
units of affordable housing and produce $1.2 billion in economic activity over
30 years. The groundbreaking represents the first activity at the site in

Mayor Bowser Announces
90/90/90/50 Plan to End the District’s HIV Epidemic
On Thursday, December 1, 2016, in recognition of World AIDS Day, Mayor Muriel Bowser, announced the
release of 90/90/90/50, a plan for ending the HIV epidemic in the District by 2020. Through this
public-private partnership, the 90/90/90/50 plan will achieve the following
core goals:
- 90 percent of DC residents with HIV will know
their status
- 90 percent of DC residents diagnosed with HIV will be in treatment
-
90 percent of DC residents in treatment will
achieve viral load suppression
- The District will see an overall 50 percent
decrease in new HIV cases.

African start-up Helps and Inspires Young Female Entrepreneurs
A new movement of digital-savvy women is taking root in Africa, and many
of its pioneers are on display via the hashtag #MotherlandMoguls.
Afua Osei and Yasmin Belo-Osagie —
co-founders of the media and events company SheLeadsAfrica — coined the moniker
to refer to members of their fast-growing online sisterhood of millennial urban
women united by a shared ambition to build businesses or carve fulfilling
careers. Judging by the crowds at their SheHive networking events in Lagos and
Abuja, the duo appear to have identified a big market for the inspirational
content on their website and the support they offer start-ups.
