Dear Washingtonians,
It may only be the beginning of August, but back to school is around the corner for hundreds of students throughout the District. This school year, eleven DCPS elementary and middle schools will be on an extended-year calendar.
Under this new calendar, students will get at least an extra 20 days of learning time in math, reading, science, social studies, art, music, and other subjects. Over the course of elementary and middle school, this additional time will add up to an extra year of instruction.
We also strive to extend opportunities for learning during the summer. This summer, we launched the DCPS study abroad initiative. Through this program, hundreds of DCPS students traveled around the globe to focus on language immersion, global leadership, and service learning. Students in the District are becoming globally aware citizens, and we will continue to work each and every day to ensure that more children are exposed to a variety of learning opportunities.
As students and staff head back to their schools, join me in making sure our streets are safe for everyone. Remember to slow down when driving near schools, and to be extra patient as families figure out their pick-up and drop-off locations.

DC's Department of Human Services (DHS) has kicked off their annual Fill a Back Pack, Fuel a Dream Campaign! The goal is to collect enough school supplies for all the youth living in DC General and other facilities, as well as those participating in any of the Youth Services Division programs. In order to reach this goal, DHS is accepting donations of school supplies and back packs until August 17.
Residents interested in donating can find the DCPS K-12 school supply list HERE. All donations may be dropped off at any DHS service center location.

This summer, through the DCPS Career Ready Internship initiative, more than 500 students spent their days in paid internships at some of the District's premiere organizations, linking the skills and knowledge they have learned in school to critical work experiences. Through this initiative, which partners with the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, students received 75,000 hours of on-the-job experience at companies including Accenture, Marriott, Washington Nationals, the World Bank, The White House, and more!

Mayor Bowser met with the students who have spent their summers working within the Executive Office of the Mayor.
The students were here through the LEAD internship program, a program started by Mayor Bowser in order to provide students and recent graduates with a taste of local government, and the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, which was recently expanded by Mayor Bowser to include people ages 22 to 24.

The DC Office on Aging is hosting the Mayor’s Fifth Annual Senior Symposium today, August 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School. This year’s theme is "Healthy Living. Healthy Hearts. Healthy Homes." The event will cover a wide-range of topics with a core focus on health, wellness and senior programming and services. The symposium will include an opening plenary session followed by workshops uniquely designed for older residents in the District. The workshop topics will include healthcare, technology, elder justice, housing, senior villages, caregivers support, accessing government resources, long-term care planning and more.
Ths Senior Symposium is free and open to the public.

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides quality urban recreation and leisure services for residents and visitors to the District of Columbia. DPR's mission is to enhance the quality of life and wellness for DC residents and visitors by providing equal access to affordable and quality recreational services by organizing programs, activities and events.
DPR has an opening for a Park Ranger. The Park Ranger participates in planning and coordinating special events and programs. In carrying out the principal day-to-day duties, the Ranger is also responsible for monitoring and reporting on the condition of the resources in the park. All details
