Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Over the past several months, we have been working tirelessly with the New Columbia Statehood Commission to push for statehood. We can remedy one of the greatest civil rights and voting injustices of modern time by ensuring that the residents in our nation’s capital are given the same basic rights as residents across the United States of America.

Outside of the District, many Americans are not aware that the nearly 700,000 residents living here are denied a vote in Congress. We must spread the word because equal representation in Congress is about fairness. It is above party politics.

That is why I traveled I went to the Republican National Convention to discuss statehood. Next week, I will be heading to the Democratic National Convention to do the same.

The time for statehood is now. I refuse to sit by while our basic rights are ignoredBut I can’t do it alone. We have to do this together. I call on you to join me in championing statehood by sharing the #DCStatehood "Stat of the Week."

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowserstat1

Download the "Stat of the Week" and share on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #DCStatehood to spread the word about why DC deserves statehood.

Nelson Mandela Day of Service

mandela day

Inspired by former South African President Nelson Mandela’s life and years of public service, the Mayor's Office on African Affairs (MOAA) hosted its second annual Mandela Day of Service in the District on Saturday, July 16. Members of the African community and interested volunteers joined MOAA staff and other District residents in conducting a clean-up of the Anacostia River.

The Mandela Day of Service included 120 participants who helped to remove over 1,800 pounds of trash on the Anacostia River in Ward 8.

You can learn about more ways to volunteer in DC at serve.dc.gov.

Congratulations, DC Breeze!

Breeze

On Saturday, Mayor Bowser cheered on the DC Breeze, our professional ultimate frisbee team, in their first-round playoff game against the New York Empire. Recently, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and the DC Breeze teamed up to host Ultimate Frisbee clinics at Fort Stanton Recreation Center. By hosting these clinics, we're not only introducing ultimate frisbee to the next generation of players, we're also making sure kids have access to outdoor activities.

With their 24-20 victory over New York, the Breeze now advance to the East Finals at Toronto. Way to go, DC Breeze!

On Friday, Mayor Bowser attended a welcome reception for the 60th Anniversary of Sister Cities International at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. Sister Cities International promotes peace and prosperity by fostering relationships between communities from across the globe.

This year's conference was held July 13-16 with the theme “Peace Through People.” We applaud Sister Cities International for creating a network of citizen diplomacy that creates and strengthens partnerships between communities in the United States and those in other countries, and we are proud of all 14 of our Sister City relationships.

Zika Prevention

Fight the Bite

On Saturday, the DC Department of Health (DOH) provided 2,000 free Zika virus prevention kits (insect repellent, mosquito dunks and condoms) and education materials to District residents at locations in all eight wards. DOH staff were on site at each location to inform residents on how to protect themselves from mosquito bites and prevent the spread of mosquito-borne, including Zika virus.

Residents can learn more about Zika virus and other viruses transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes HERE.
