Message from Laura Newland, Executive Director DCOA
Happy Summer! Every June, the District of Columbia celebrates Gay Pride, and the Capital Pride Alliance hosts two weeks of events that include the Capital Pride Festival and Parade. The DC Office on Aging (DCOA) is proud (get it?) and excited to participate in both of the main Pride events and celebrate the LGBT community with the rest of the District. The generation that established DC’s first Pride celebration in 1972 is now part of our aging community, and DCOA is committed to better understanding the needs of our LGBTQ seniors in the District and making sure that the hard-fought gains to allow people to live freely and openly don’t go away when they age.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. The association also estimates that the disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country, and more people die from the disease than those that die from breast and prostate cancer combined. Figures like these are startling, and the toll that providing care takes on the families and caregivers, as well as the money that this nation spends on care for those with Alzheimer’s, is even more startling.
The Office on Aging has great programs to assist residents with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), including Saturday Respite, Money Management Program and Club Memory. There are also various adult day care programs that operate daily, and allow working caregivers options for care of their loved ones while they work. The
Elder Abuse Prevention Committee (EAPC), in partnership with the District’s
Collaborative Training & Response for Older Victims (DC TROV), is
commemorating the 10th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on
Wednesday, June 15th, 2016. The
International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health
Organization at the United Nations (UN) first launched World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2006, in an effort to unite communities
around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse. WEAAD is done in
support of the UN’s International Plan of Action acknowledging the significance
of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
DC
TROV studies have found that of the 70,000 seniors living in Washington, D.C.,
7,000 may have experienced abuse, neglect or financial exploitation during 2016
alone. It is for this reason I’m writing to
request your help in bringing awareness to elder abuse, neglect, and financial
exploitation. Specifically, I am requesting that you and your staff
join our effort by participating in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
EAPC and DC
TROV will be distributing resource packets to the DCOA Senior Wellness Centers
and Lead Agencies on Monday.
