Member of the DC Commission on African Affairs, Nana Afari-Dwamena Redefines the African Diaspora Culinary Experience

Food
is intrinsic to African heritage and customs. Whether it’s fufu, nsima, atkit
wot, caldeirada de cabrito à Angolana or rasta pasta, the food of the African
diaspora has the power to connect people wherever they are. To showcase the
diversity of African cuisine, millennial tastemakers are revolutionizing
culinary platforms by creating new spaces—for Africans, by Africans—to
emphasize and celebrate the recipes, traditions, and cultures of the diaspora.
Gathering an array of change makers from
various professional backgrounds, Dine Diaspora is led by a dynamic team of
African female game-changers in the District—Maame Boakye, director of event
production and talent management, Nana Ama Afari-Dwamena, director of digital
communications and community engagement, and Nina Oduro, director of visual

Mayor Bowser Kicks Off District-Wide Spring Cleaning Campaign

On Monday, April 25, 2016, Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked-off a District-wide spring cleaning campaign at the Fort Totten Transfer Station. Continuing until the end of the week, the campaign will highlight District resources available to help DC residents remove waste; keeping homes and the city clean and healthy to live in.
“In a city as prosperous as ours, beautifying our neighborhoods and keeping our city clean and healthy is essential,” said Mayor Bowser. “Our DPW team works year-round clearing residential streets, removing graffiti, collecting leaves and holiday trees, clearing snow and ice from our roadways, and removing trash and recycling among many other things. To keep our city in tip-top shape, it also takes community involvement. My District-wide spring cleaning campaign highlights the services offered by DPW to help residents keep the District clean, so that they can continue to live, work, and play in our great city.”

Mayor Bowser Presents Virginia McLaurin with New ID; Issues Senior- Friendly ‘Real ID’ Regulations

On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, Mayor Bowser announced a new regulation that allows the Department of Motor Vehicles to help District senior citizens aged 70 and older who need a Real ID, but who may lack the necessary documentation to get that ID.
“Our seniors deserve easy access to a government photo ID so they can take advantage of the many benefits, activities and services that other residents enjoy,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “These common sense regulations will ensure that District seniors can get an ID if they lack the kind of documentation that may not have been around when they were born.”
The new regulations, which meet federal requirements, go into effect immediately.

Why Is There Such A Large Ethiopian Population In The Washington Region?
The Washington region is home to the largest concentration of Ethiopians outside of Africa. Ethiopians in D.C. began opening shops and restaurants in Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights and, when rents got too expensive, the Shaw area. Today the largest concentration of Ethiopian businesses is in Silver Spring, Maryland, and to a lesser extent, Alexandria, Virginia.
But when did they get here? And how did Washington become home to "Little Ethiopia" and "Little Eritrea?" That was the question listener Ben Weingrod asked as part of WAMU 88.5's What's with Washington project. In a way, the answer for the first wave of emigres starts with Detroit.
