Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

I told you we would fight for statehood.  And last Thursday, we took another important step in that fight.

The New Columbia Statehood Commission – which coordinates our push to become the 51st state – advanced a plan that will give District voters the ability to petition Congress and the next President.  Rather than waiting another several decades for Congress to act, we will take your voice straight to the Capitol.

Will you stand with me and the Commission in our push for statehood?  Sign up HERE or visit Statehood.DC.Gov to show your support, and to receive updates.

Together, we will make ‘taxation without representation’ a slogan of the past.  Together, we will achieve full equality for the residents of the District of Columbia.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

spring cleaning

Yesterday, Mayor Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) kicked off the District's third AlleyPalooza campaign, the Mayor's initiative to repair eight alleys in each of the District's eight wards in 12 weeks – a total of 64 alleys throughout the District. Residents can track the daily progress of work at all 64 AlleyPalooza sites at http://ddot.dc.gov/page/alleypalooza-campaign-3.

AlleyPalooza was day-three of Mayor Bowser's District-wide spring cleaning campaign, a week-long campaign to highlight resources available to help DC residents remove waste; keeping home and the city clean and healthy to live in. Here are some of the other programs and resources Mayor Bowser showcased:

Fort Totten Transfer Station. The Fort Totten Transfer Station operates as a one-stop location for waste removal; including the disposal of solid waste, household hazardous waste, unwanted electronic equipment, and personal document shredding. The Station also offers free compost. Mayor Bowser launched the spring cleaning campaign at the Fort Totten Transfer Station on Monday. More information about the Station can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/service/fort-totten-transfer-station

Adopt-A-Block. Mayor Bowser re-launched the Adopt-A-Block program on Wednesday, a District program that fosters community involvement in city maintenance by encouraging residents and volunteers to "adopt" and maintain a neighborhood block. For more information and to sign-up, visit occc.dc.gov/service/adopt-block.

DOH Public Health Pilot Program. Today, Mayor Bowser, the Department of Public Works and the Department of Health will launch a pilot rodent abatement program. Mayor Bowser will kick-off the program at Spring Mill Bread Co. on 8th Street SE at 10:30 a.m. Information about the program will be available at doh.dc.gov.

DC United Infrastructure Groundbreaking

crane

Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser and DC United broke ground at Ward 6's Buzzard Point in preparation for DC's new soccer stadium. The demolition represented the first step toward revitalizing an overlooked area of the District that will spur economic activity on the banks of the Anacostia River. The $300 million state-of-the-art facility is a public-private partnership that will create nearly 900 job opportunities for District residents, and strengthen the city’s commitment to community and fan engagement. Training, apprenticeships, and workforce development opportunities will be provided to connect neighborhood residents to jobs stemming from this project.

Want a recap of the event itself? Watch DC United's video coverage HERE.

Supporting Our Students' Commitment to Higher Education

College Signing Day

Tomorrow, Mayor Bowser will join U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. and the District’s education leaders in a celebration of the District’s college-bound high school seniors at DC College Signing Day.

The Mayor will highlight her commitment to encouraging all students across the District to Reach Higher - pursuing and completing a postsecondary degree, an initiative led nationwide by First Lady Michelle Obama.

In support of our students, join Mayor Bowser, Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles and State Superintendent Hanseul Kang in wearing gear from your own alma mater or favorite college around town on Friday. Download your Signing Day posters here and post photos of you in your college apparel to social media with the hashtags #ReachHigher and #CollegeReadyDC. Don’t forget to tag the posts with @MayorBowser and @OSSEDC.

District Directors Receive 2016 Arbor Day Award

arbord

The Arbor Day Foundation will honor DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo and Department of Energy and Environment Director Tommy Wells for the Champion of Trees Awards on Saturday for their leadership in advancing forestry public policy. Both directors were integral players in the launch of Canopy 3,000 —a public-private partnership to plant 3,000 additional trees in Washington D.C. in 2016. The campaign, which includes the National Park Service as one of the main partners, is part of a broader initiative to increase the District’s tree canopy to 40 percent by 2032.

Prescription Drug Take-Back

This Saturday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will participate in the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, where individuals can drop-off their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs for safe disposal. The Take-Back event is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at any of the following locations:

  • First District Station - 101 M Street, SW
  • First District Sub Station - 500 E Street, SE
  • Second District Station - 3320 Idaho Avenue, NW
  • Third District Station - 1620 V Street, NW
  • Fourth District  Station -  6001 Georgia Avenue, NW
  • Fourth District Sub Station - 750 Park Road, NW
  • Fifth District Station  -  1805 Bladensburg Road, NE
  • Sixth District Station  -  5002 Hayes Street, NE
  • Seventh District Station -  2455 Alabama Avenue, SE

Proper disposal of unused drugs is important to saving lives and protecting our environment. If thrown in the trash, unused drugs can be retrieved, used by teens or children or sold on the streets. If flushed, unused drugs can contaminate our water supply. Help keep our residents safe and our city clean.
