Tomorrow, residents in the District and across the world will come together to celebrate Earth Day, in support of a clean and healthy environment.
Serve DC – my Office on Volunteerism – will host two clean-ups of the Anacostia River on Saturday morning. I hope you’ll come out and join us at one of the following:

In collaboration with Earth Conservation Corps and the Girl Scouts of the Nation's Capital, we are hosting a cleanup from 10-12 p.m. at River Terrace Park. RSVP HERE.

ICYMI: The District's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was awarded full accreditation by the national oversight board, making it the first time the medical examiner in the nation's capital has ever received such a ranking. Read the full piece on The Washington Post.
Last Friday and Saturday, DC commemorated Emancipation Day - the 154th anniversary of achieving freedom for more than 3,000 men, women and children who were enslaved in the District of Columbia. Mayor Bowser hosted a parade, concert, fireworks, and more. During the celebrations, the Mayor made it clear that the District still lacks full democracy, representation in Congress, and statehood. And she’s ready to take the fight to the people. Mayor Bowser will ensure that statehood has its rightful place on the ballot in this November’s election, to show the next President and Congress that DC stands together in our fight to become the 51st state in the union.

On Tuesday, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Brian Kenner announced over $5.3 million in FY2016 awards for the Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Reimbursement Grants. The investment continues the Bowser Administration’s effort to support local businesses, create new job opportunities for DC residents, and grow the District’s emerging neighborhoods. Mayor Bowser also announced $300,000 in the first-ever Emerging Business Improvement District (BID) grants. They were awarded to:
- Historic DuPont Circle Main Street
- H Street Main Street
- Shaw Main Street
- Congress Heights Community and Training Development Corporation
- Mid-City Business Improvement District

Summer is almost here! Let's make sure our youngest residents have a fun, fit, and strong summer.
DPR Summer Camps. Rolling registration for the 2016 Department of Parks and Recreation Summer Camp season opened in February. The summer camps vary in interest from engineering, to ballet, to general recreation. Sign-up today!
DCPS Summer Schools. Research shows that students who don’t participate in summer learning activities lose ground over the summer compared to peers who do. The good news? Summer school registration is open! Visit dcps.dc.gov/summerschool for information and to register.

In February, Mayor Bowser launched the Private Security Camera Incentive Program to provide rebates for the purchase, installation, and registration of security camera systems placed on the exterior of home and buildings owned or leased by DC residents, businesses, nonprofits or religious institutions. The installation of private security cameras in the city is another step to deter crime and assist police during investigations.
