Technology Officer (OCTO), DCHR's Center for Learning and Development and Coders4Africa (C4A) cordially invite you to the EKO | African Diaspora
Coding Academy Session II graduation ceremony. The event will recognize
45 participants who have successfully completed the five-week training and
development program.
EKO | African Diaspora Coding Academy is a
capacity building program developed by MOAA, in partnership with OCTO and
Coders4Africa, to provide greater access to free coding classes, software design,
and application development to 120 African-born residents in the District of
Columbia. EKO reflects Mayor Bowser’s commitment to focus on high-growth
industries such as technology to stimulate job creation and prepare District
constituents with long-term competitive skills that will place under-served
community members on ‘Pathways to the Middle Class.’
The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs invitesthe District's
African community members interested in the EKO program to come and learn more about
how to apply for the upcoming session on mobile application training scheduled to start in April
2016.

N Street Village Selected as Homeless Services Provider for the Patricia Handy Place for Women

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, as part of the Bowser Administration’s all eight ward approach to transform the District’s response to homelessness and improve the quality and effectiveness of services, Mayor Bowser and partners announced that District-based N Street Village will manage and operate the Patricia Handy Place for Women. The Patricia Handy Place for Women is a new facility that will serve as many as 213 women each night. N Street Village is known nationally as an innovator in homeless services with a track-record of empowering homeless and low-income women. Last month, Mayor Bowser along with DHS Director Laura Zeilinger and Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans cut the ribbon on the new facility, which is set to open next month.
“In a city as prosperous as ours, we need to do better by our fellow residents experiencing homelessness,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “The District’s partnership with N Street Village to operate the Patricia Handy Place is a model for how the District plans to fight homelessness in our city. We will build facilities that fit into their communities and work with top-notch providers to implement programs that will help those in need.”

Mayor Bowser, Howard University Break Ground on DC’s First ‘Inclusive Innovation’ Hub
On Tuesday, March 8, 2016 Mayor Muriel Bowser was joined by representatives from Howard University and Luma Lab to break ground on the District’s first Inclusive Innovation Incubator. The new space will support entrepreneurs and businesses from underrepresented communities that provide products and services that benefit underserved communities.Today’s groundbreaking comes ahead of a trip by Mayor Bowser and District officials traveling to South by Southwest to meet with national tech leaders to promote economic opportunities in the District.
“Today, we take another big step towards building a tech ecosystem in the District that will make us a national leader in the fields of technology and inclusive innovation,” said Mayor Bowser. “This new incubator will support our growing technology and innovation sectors and ensure we address the needs of startups and entrepreneurs in the District. I look forward to working with Howard University and Luma Lab to foster innovation and equity in all 8 Wards.”

Sierra Leoneans, Guineans and Liberians Campaign for TPS Renewal
Come May 2016, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Sierra Leoneans, Guineans and Liberians living in the United States without work authorization will expire. Unless the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authorizes an extension, thousands of people from these three Ebola affected countries face deportation. The African community in the United States has coalesced to rally for a TPS extension when the aforementioned countries TPS authorization expires in May 2016.

Young Immigrant Success Story
He fled to the U.S. for political asylum. Two years later, he won a full-ride to GWU.
Mikias Gebremeskel stood in a public spot in Ethiopia’s capital city handing out anti-government fliers to passersby. Two police officers approached the teenager, arrested him, and then, while he sat in prison for five days, beat him with their batons.
His uncle arranged to have Gebremeskel released, and in July 2014, he fled to the United States seeking political asylum. He moved to the nation’s capital, where his cousins lived, and enrolled as a junior at Roosevelt Senior High School in Petworth, one of the city’s lowest-performing high schools.

Preschoolers Learn How to Cook Healthy Meals
Oyé, a native of Liberia and Frann Robertson, an early-childhood-education specialist at Leckie have built a virtual pre-K curriculum around preparing healthy meals. The initiative is designed to help children learn how to prepare and serve food and to sharpen their social skills. The program is also meant to teach children the benefits of eating healthy which can jump-start a child’s cognitive and physical development.

Advancing Science and Technology for Africa
Patrick Awuah, Founder and President of Ashesi University College, a private, not-for-profit institution that has quickly gained a reputation for innovation and quality education in Ghana, presented his ideas on transforming Africa at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington DC in February 2016. Patrick Awuah grew up in Ghana, then went to college in the United States and worked at Microsoft. But when his first child was born, he felt he should go back to Africa. In 1999, he took a step towards realizing that dream when he founded Ashesi University, a private college in Accra, Ghana. It offers four-year bachelor's’ courses focusing on computer science, engineering and business administration.

Africa Development: Young 'Einsteins' Make Their Pitch
Senegal hosted a landmark global science forum this week, the first of its kind in Africa, bringing together more than 700 leading scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs and other key figures from the world of politics and civil society.
The Next Einstein Forum wants to turn Africa into a global hub for science and technology by bringing the continent's top brains together with investors and policymakers.
As part of their quest to ensure the next Einstein comes from the continent, young African scientists were asked to come up with innovations that could "solve a big problem for humanity".

SBRC One-on-One Session: Basic Steps to Obtaining a Business License
During this session, the DCRA Small Business Resource Center (SBRC) staff will provide one-on-one assistance with navigating through the regulatory process.
