 DCOA wishes you a Happy Lunar New Year!
Seniors across the city are having Lunar New Year Celebrations. DCOA’s Acting
Executive Director Laura Newland celebrated with the Asian and Pacific Islander Senior Service Center
located at 417 G Place, N.W.
The
festive event included the traditional dance of the Dragon, special performances and lunch during the celebration of the lunar
new year.
 Hattie Holmes Senior Wellness Center participants planned a Black
History Program and invited District
leaders and members of the community. Acting Executive Director Laura Newland gave greetings as part of the program.
Seniors dressed in costume to depict important leaders from the past and
present that included First Lady Michelle Obama and Aviator Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman
to stage a public flight in America.
A member of the
center delivered "Normalcy, Never Again"
more commonly known as the "I Have a Dream" speech written by Martin
Luther King, Jr. Audience members also participated in black history related trivia
during the celebration.

The D.C. Office on Aging (DCOA) is seeking
District residents who are 100 years or older to honor during our 30th Annual
Salute to Centenarians in April.
If you know of residents who will have
celebrated their centennial birthday by April 30, 2016, please call Darlene

When registering centenarians, please make sure you know the name, date of
birth and contact information for each individual.

the next Ms. Senior D.C. Pageant!
Contestants are judged on a personal
interview, their philosophy of life, their talent and evening gown
presentations. The winner will represent the District of Columbia and compete
in the Ms. Senior America Pageant. For more information on how to sign up,

 The Private Security Camera Incentive Program, administered by the
Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (Office), creates a rebate
for residents, businesses, nonprofits, and religious institutions to
purchase and install security camera systems on their property and
register them with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The program
provides a rebate of up to $200 per camera, with a maximum rebate of up
to $500 per residential address and $750 for all other addresses. This
program is intended to help deter crime and assist law enforcement with
investigations.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
(WMATA-Metro) is offering a 2-Day Travel Training Workshop for professionals
who provide services for people with disabilities and/or older adults in the
Washington, DC area. This course provides travel trainers with the
information they need to train people with disabilities and older adults to use
accessible Metrobus and Metrorail public transportation systems successfully. It includes class work as
well as orientation in the system. The workshop will be held at The
Jackson Graham Building 600 5th St. NW, Washington, DC 20001 in the Lobby
Training Room.
Please mark your calendars for Monday, March 28, and
Tuesday, March 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. SPACE IS LIMITED and
registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so turn in your
registration as soon as possible to guarantee a seat! To register, please
