Meet one of our newest YGL National Leadership Team Members Michael Bailey!
What has your career trajectory been so far?
My career trajectory has been a combination of state government jobs, local government appointments, and statewide appointments through the Governor's Office. My first job in government was as a HR intern for the Medical University of South Carolina. From there, I leveraged my experience and my private sector recruiter experience to land a role as an Employment and Recruitment Supervisor for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. 10 years later, I've worked in three states, under four governors, and within five state agencies and held 4 political appointments ranging from Board of Trustees for a Hospital to the Governor's Designee on a state licensing board. In each case, the goal has been the same:
- Take pride in your work
- Pave the path for others to come after you
- Build something that outlives you?
What drew you to YGL?
I was drawn to YGL because of its mission. I come from a military family and I went to a military college, so the idea of service is one that I've always been taught to honor. More than that however, I also understand that it is a privilege. YGL shares the view point and tries to assist other government leaders who wish to make a lasting difference for their communities and families.
What does your position do?
I currently serve in the executive division of Washington State's Department of Revenue, as the agency's Legislative and External Affairs Liaison. Currently, the department administers 60 categories of taxes that help fund $28.8 billion in education, human services, health care, public safety, natural resources, and other services offered to our communities. As part of my role, I advise and assist the Governor, the Legislature, and individual legislators – on a nonpartisan basis – regarding state revenue and issues affecting state programs.
How do you lead change in the government?
By making policy non-political. In my role, I assist with providing technical assistance on a nonpartisan basis. By approaching existing and new legislation through this lens, we are able to craft sound and administrable laws.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I love Latin dances (bachata and salsa mainly) and I intend to change the world one day. Hopefully I'll get to break ground on that goal while working with YGL.
