News from Muriel
July 9, 2014
Dear Neighbors:
I hope you had an enjoyable July 4th
weekend. I had the privilege of joining residents from all over the District at
the Crestwood Kids 4th of July Parade, the Capitol Hill 4th
of July Parade, and the Palisades 4th of July Parade. There was tons
of red, white, and blue, and I had a wonderful time celebrating our country’s
independence.
Today, I also want to join our Metropolitan
Police Department in asking for the public’s assistance in apprehending those
responsible for the deadly robbery of the Gold Corner Market at 14th
and Kennedy Street, NW. Persons of interest can be seen in this video: http://youtu.be/9h103uv4I9c.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or text your
tip to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.

The
Office of Planning (OP) is proposing changes to the zoning regulations that
would substantially alter the way “pop ups” can be built in the R-4 zones in
the city. Currently, these additions to homes are “use by rights,” and
many neighbors have been extremely upset by the additional height and dwelling
units in previous single family dwellings. The proposal would change the
maximum height from 40 feet to 35 feet., except by special exception, and would
add language that states the following: the height or upper addition will not
have a substantially adverse effect on the use or enjoyment of any abutting or
adjacent dwelling or property; the light and air available to neighboring
properties shall not be unduly affected; the privacy of use and enjoyment of
neighboring properties shall not be unduly compromised; the resulting building
height, as viewed from the street, alley, and other public way, shall not
substantially visually intrude upon the character, scale and pattern of houses
along the subject street frontage along with other requirements.
The
Zoning Commission will consider whether they will hold public hearings on this
language on July 17th.
Pepco
and the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) have teamed up to educate
residents on important energy-saving tips that could save them money on every
electric bill. Energize DC is a partnership that teaches customers how
to develop personalized energy-management plans. Scheduled classes at DC Public Library
locations are 60 minutes long and offer simple ways to conserve energy. The
course was developed by Pepco and The George Washington University to explain
home electricity use and what tools are available to reduce cost. Children’s activity books and fun giveaways
will also be given to parents who attend one of this summer’s Energize DC
classes at libraries to help their kids get hooked on reading. Kids who
complete the activity book guides will be able to count it toward their 8-hour
summer reading goal.
In
Ward 4, classes will be held on August 14th at the Petworth Library,
located at 4200 Kansas Avenue, NW and on September 24th at the
Lamond- Riggs Library, located at 5401 South Dakota Avenue, NE. All programs begin at 7PM.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service
Program, known in Washington, DC as the DC Free Summer Meals Program, provides
reimbursement for free nutritious meals and snacks served to children 18 and
younger. These meals help children in low-income areas get the nutrition they
need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months when they are out of
school.
When school is out, the meals served as a part of the
National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are not available,
and due to families' limited budgets, or other circumstances, children will
often miss wholesome meals.
To
locate a site where meals are available, you can call 211, text “Food” to
202-6565-EAT(328), or visit http://onecityyouth.dc.gov/page/featured-programs
where you will find an interactive map outlining the locations. Sites include:
DC Parks and Recreation facilities, schools, churches, community organizations,
and more.
