Dear
Neighbors:
There
are a lot of great things happening this weekend. Please join me this Saturday,
June 28th for my annual Ward 4 Family Fun Day! Once again, we will
enjoy an afternoon of food, fun and activities at the Kingsbury Day School,
5000 14th Street, NW from 2PM-4PM.
Plenty of government agencies and community organizations will be
on-hand for activities.
I
will also be the Grand Marshall at the 2nd Annual DC Historically
Black College and University (HBCU) Alumni 5K Run/2K Walk beginning at 8AM. Please
join me as we help raise scholarship funds for students in the Washington, DC
area.
On June 24, the D.C. Council adopted the Fiscal
Year 2015 budget for the District. Councilmember Bowser supported a number of
items, including:
The approval of almost $100 million for
funding for affordable housing, including $80 million to the Housing Production
Trust Fund, $11.5 million for the Home Purchase Assistance Program, an
additional $7 million in rental vouchers for individuals and families,
individuals with mental illness, and low-income seniors, an extra $1.5 million
to continue a Rapid Re-Housing pilot for individuals, and $500,000 in
additional funding for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program to help
residents facing eviction,
Programs focused on seniors, including $4.8
million dedicated to produce affordable housing for seniors, $8 million for the
Single Family Residential Rehabilitation Program so that seniors and other
homeowners can fix building code violations and age-in-place; and a new program
that allows senior citizens who are 75 years or older, and who earn less than
$50,000 to defer payment of property taxes.
Critical Ward 4 priorities were funded
as a result of Councilmember Bowser’s work on the budget, including $7 million
to build a new Ward 4 Middle School, and $1.25 million for Kennedy Street to
make streetscape improvements and other beautification efforts that promote
economic development on this burgeoning corridor.
Councilmember Bowser’s work will also
spur job creation and promote productive economic development for District
residents and businesses:$105,000 to hire a Career Pathways Coordinator to
develop a cross-agency jobs plan; expansion of the retail priority grant fund
to benefit commercial revitalization in Wards 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8; $800,000 to
improve and expand emerging business districts in Wards 7 and 8;
and a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed soccer stadium to ensure
that the District makes a sound investment of tax payer dollars.
On Saturday, June 28, 2014, the DC HBCU Alumni Alliance will host
the 2nd Annual 5K Run/2K Walk. The goal is to raise scholarship
funds for students in the Washington, DC metro area who are interested in
attending a Historically Black College or University. The HBCU Alumni Alliance
also aims to enhance the relevance of Historically Black Colleges and
Universities in the Washington, DC area, while highlighting the importance of
living a healthy lifestyle. The event will take place at RFK Stadium.
