News from Muriel
January 22, 2014
Dear Neighbors:
With the
forecast for continuing severe cold weather, I urge everyone to take
precautions. Please don’t drive unless it is absolutely necessary. If you do, please be careful on the roads and
make sure to clear all the snow and ice from your vehicles’ hood, roof,
windows, and lights to keep you and other drivers safe from harm. Please make sure to properly shovel and salt
areas around your property to ensure the safety of pedestrians and families in
our neighborhoods. City crews have been treating
the streets and will be removing the snow. If your street has ice, please
first call 311 and then please don’t hesitate to contact my office at
202-724-8052 if you don’t see results.
Pepco reports
it has about 150 internal linemen and more than 450 contractors already working
on its system who are available if needed. They are in contact with DC
management and are asking customers to please call in any outages and downed
wires to 1-877-Pepco-62 (1-877-737-2662). If you know people without
electricity or see people exposed to the cold, please call the Hypothermia
Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311. You can also send an email
to the Shelter Hotline at uposh@upo.org.
I will continue to monitor the weather and the streets and keep you
posted.

Pepco is warning its
customers that scammers posing as third-party energy suppliers are sending fake
utility bills via email to some utility customers around the country. The email asks that customers click on a link
contained within the email. It is suspected that, by clicking the link, the
customer’s computer could become infected with a virus or malware.
Pepco asks customers
to pay their utility bill only by visiting www.pepco.com
or by sending the hard copy of the remittance portion of the invoice through
the mail. Customers should not open any
email asking that payment be made on their utility bill unless sent by Pepco or
by the customers’ respective third party energy supplier.
If someone claims to
represent a company, whether the company is Pepco or another entity, it is
important that customers take precautions to verify that the person is
affiliated with the company, especially if that person is requesting an
immediate monetary payment. When addressing
past due accounts, Pepco never endorses a specific form of payment. Instead, multiple payment options are always
given to the customer.
Pepco advises
customers to ask for official photo identification from any person who shows up
at their door. Employees from reputable
companies, such as Pepco, will carry official company identification cards. If
proper identification cannot be produced, customers should notify police and
the company with whom the individual claims are associated. Also, if customers have any doubt about the
validity of a person’s claim to represent Pepco, they should call the company
immediately at 202-833-7500.

Metro is seeking feedback from riders and will offer many
convenient opportunities for them to comment on the proposed FY15 budget and
fare changes, as well as Metro’s Capital Improvement Program.
The public’s first opportunity to comment on the proposal
is an online survey that is live at wmata.com/budgetsurvey.
The survey is open until 5:00PM on February 11th, and is provided as
an alternative to submitting a verbal or written statement for the
record. Survey results will be presented to the Board as part of the
public record.
The survey is one of several opportunities for the public
to be heard. Another is through participation in public hearings in the
District, Maryland and Virginia. Metro’s Board of Directors will host a
series of six public hearings between Wednesday, January 29th and Thursday,
February 6th. Each public
hearing will be preceded by an informal Information Session, starting at 6:00PM.
The Information Sessions provide the public with an opportunity to learn about
Metro’s current work to improve service and to provide comments and suggestions
on any topic, including subjects that are not on the docket. Public hearings
will begin at 6:30PM to provide the public an opportunity to give formal
testimony on the docket of proposed budget actions.
For more information and to review the docket, visit www.wmata.com/hearings.
