"We decided to try therapeutic foster care specifically for the foster child getting placed in our home. There are more resources for the child and more resources for us. So far it has been a win/win!" -Kim Serna

Plan structured time this summer (Part 2)
Check out Part 1 in May's newsletter!
Last month, we covered reasons for planning structure into your summer. Kids in foster care particularly benefit from structure with some opportunities for flexibility and “off days.” Make sure you also schedule some downtime for yourself! Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Create a summer activity schedule with themes like Make-It Monday (crafts), Water Wednesday (sprinklers, pool), Field Trip Friday (local parks, hikes, geocaching, museums, libraries).
- Schedule daily unplugged hours when everyone puts their phones away (including adults).
- Have your kids plan a week’s worth of activities.
- Let kids earn screen time by completing tasks (like a summer chore/reward chart).
- Help them learn a new skill like photography, gardening, knitting, cooking a new recipe of their choice, or even car basics.
- Schedule some no-tech events like movie nights with popcorn or game nights.
- Encourage kids to join a summer reading program through the library or create your own program with a point system and small rewards.
- Check out your city’s events calendar for festivals, free movie nights, concerts. See some local summer events below!
- Check with your local school or parks and rec for sports clinics, swimming lessons, crafting opportunities.
- Let your kids plan a camping trip or set up a fun campsite in your back yard for relaxing.
- Make sure you schedule some guilt-free time just for you when kids are napping, reading, or asleep.
- Meet a friend, or attend a support group or therapy appointment so you can talk with people who can listen without judgment.
