APRIL 2021

THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT

NLW 2021

WELCOME NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK 2021
"WELCOME TO YOUR LIBRARY"

APRIL 4-10

This April, Vail Public Library (VPL) encourages all community members to visit our website at vaillibrary.com, to explore and access virtual services and programs. VPL offers a wide array of online resources that are available from the comfort of home, including ebooks, eaudiobooks, emusic, evideos, emagazines, arts and crafts programs and Virtual Yoga and Zumba Fitness classes.

April 4-10, 2021 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “WELCOME TO YOUR LIBRARY” which promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building and that everyone is welcome to use their services. Whether people visit virtually or in person, libraries are accessible and inclusive places that foster a sense of belonging and community through learning, discovery and exploration.

This National Library Week, the public can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting the library’s website, following us on social media and using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek.

AMNESTY MONTH

APRIL 4-30

Vail Public Library, in celebration of National Library Week, will be  offering an Amnesty Month from April 4, 2021 through April 30, 2021.

This is an effort to recover overdue library materials by offering a “fine free” month. The purpose of the amnesty is to encourage the return of needed library materials and to promote use of the library.

The amnesty does not include overdue fines still on record from previously returned materials, nor does it include fines for lost and/or damaged items.

While some materials are simply lost, a great many are still in the hands of the patrons who checked them out. The library hopes that our "no questions asked" amnesty period will remove an obstacle to the return of overdue items, including books and DVDs.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS' DAY

TUESDAY, APRIL 6

Librarians across the United States celebrate National Library Workers’ Day (NLWD) on the Tuesday of National Library Week, held in April every year.

While we cannot have in-person celebrations, it is still a good time to highlight the critical role library workers play in keeping our libraries running.

Give a shout out to a library worker you know! Discover all the resources your library offers. Support your library and its staff. When budget time comes for your city or state, do your part to support your library.

TREE

"UTE CULTURALLY MODIFIED TREES"
A VIRTUAL PRESENTATION WITH LYNN ALBERS, VAIL PUBLIC LIBRARY'S LOCAL HISTORY AND ETHNOBOTANY SPECIALIST

THURSDAY, APRIL 1 | 5:30 P.M.

Learn about trees that are living artifacts created by the Colorado Utes.   A culturally modified tree (CMT) may be described as a tree that has been altered by an indigenous people, such as the Utes, for a specific purpose.  Cultural modification of trees includes peeling the outer bark to obtain the precious inner bark for food, medicine, ceremony and practical daily life uses.  Distinctively peeled Colorado ponderosa pines are rare and impermanent reminders of the Ute way of life.

This event will take place via Zoom Meeting. No registration required.

"Vienna, 1914. Lucius is a twenty-two-year-old medical student when World War I explodes across Europe. Enraptured by romantic tales of battlefield surgery, he enlists, expecting a position at a well-organized field hospital. But when he arrives–at a commandeered church tucked away high in a remote valley of the Carpathian Mountains–he discovers a freezing outpost ravaged by typhus. The other doctors have fled, and only a single mysterious nurse named Sister Margarete remains. But Lucius has never lifted a surgeon’s scalpel. And as the war rages across the winter landscape, he finds himself falling in love with the woman from whom he must learn a brutal makeshift medicine. Then one day, an unconscious soldier is brought in from the snow, his uniform stuffed with strange drawings. He seems beyond rescue, until Lucius makes a fateful decision that will change the lives of doctor, patient, and nurse forever."
