Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!

Dear Superior residents,
Hey Superior! I can’t believe it’s already May!
If you haven’t received it already, you’ll be receiving a copy of Superior’s brand-new quarterly newsletter called Hello Superior in the mail very soon.
Hello Superior is part of the Town Board’s broader efforts to improve how we communicate with residents — reaching them where they are — instead of just relying on electronic communications like emails, social media, and websites… because it’s hard to reach everyone through digital media alone.
The first issue features stories about Marshall Fire survivors and the progress on their rebuilds, profiles on Town Board and Staff members, highlights from the Superior Community Center, upcoming events, an update on Downtown Superior, art in Superior, and much much more.
I think Hello Superior will be a valuable addition to our community and I can’t wait to see what you all think. But we’re just getting started. We want to hear from you so we can make it into the most valuable community resource possible. So let us know your thoughts. What topics should we cover in future issues? Are there specific questions you’d like answered? Specific community members who should be featured? Events that need to be profiled? Send us your ideas by emailing the Superior Communications Team.
In the meantime, enjoy the first issue.
Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Learn How to Coexist with Our Neighbor, The Coyote
Interactions between humans, pets and coyotes increase in the Spring. During this time of year, coyotes have pups near den sites and may act more territorial. This is why you see their scat more often in the middle of a trail or in more visible spaces.
In general, the following coyote tips can help reduce your conflict with coyotes and promote coexistence with this species:
- Minimize your activity around dawn and dusk
- Do not leave food (including pet food) in your backyard
- Keep pets on a leash at all times
- Use Proper hazing strategies. Do not haze coyotes if you don’t feel comfortable. Alert Town Staff of coyotes that are uncomfortably unfazed by your presence

You Can Help Prevent Stormwater Pollution
What could you be sending into our steams?
When water runs off your grass the products applied to lawns often end up in nearby streams and harm aquatic life. Stormwater runoff collects litter, pesticides, fertilizers, and other pollutants from our homes and businesses and carries it straight to local waterways untreated.
See resources from Keep It Clean Partnership to see what action you can take at home to protect creeks near you.

Award-Winning Granular Activated Carbon Water System Receives Reimbursement and a New Home
In October 2022, the Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) awarded the Town of Superior the 2022 Colorado Project of the Year. During the Marshal Fire, ash and debris from the fires were deposited in and around the Town’s raw water storage facility. While the treatment facilities continued to function and provide clean drinking water, this caused the water to have a distinct and unpleasant taste and smell.
The Town quickly began the evaluation and installation of the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) System. In November, the Town Board approved both the purchase of the previously rented GAC System as well as a new building to protect the GAC System. In April, the GAC system's building was completed, and only some minor site work remains that will be completed this month. The GAC building will help protect the GAC system from the elements, primarily preventing freezing during the harsh winter months.
The Town has been pursuing FEMA reimbursement for the GAC building and was recently notified that FEMA will reimburse up to $3,175,821.80 for the GAC improvements.
In addition to removing taste and odor issues, the GAC System will also remove disinfection byproduct precursors which at high levels can increase the risk of cancer and also remove per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) should they ever become an issue in the future; note no PFAS have been detected in Superior’s water to date.
This project is a prime example of how our community can come together, and has resulted in this project now being awarded the APWA National Project of the Year in Disaster and Emergency Construction Repair, which will be presented to the Town later this year.

Underground Electrical Lines Installed in Original Town

In April, Xcel notified the Town that they have the easements needed to start construction and is scheduled to start construction in late May or early June with work to take approximately 3 months to complete once started.
Undergrounding of the electrical system within Original Town will result increased electric safety and reliability for Original Town residents.
