Micro-Grant Success

SIPA & DOLA Partner on Yearly Broadband Micro-Grants

The Colorado SIPA Team recently received an awesome update on a SIPA-DOLA broadband Micro-Grant awardee and was reminded about the important work you all do within your communities and the impacts, big and small, you have on folks young and old.

This past Micro-Grant cycle, the town of Silver Cliff was awarded $5,000 to expand the footprint of the Silver Cliff/Westcliffe Main Street Wifi System and enable more people to access online information. Recently, the town held its annual Memorial Day Parade and counted 236 devices on the WiFi by 10:10am. The town mentions that on a normal day at that time, they see between 50-70 people and that, in tracking what access point the most folks were connected too, they see it directly related to the area where the most parade watchers were positioned. While there is no doubt that people will connect to WiFi whenever, and where ever, they can - these numbers shout that community members are searching for this WiFi, and using its working connection.

SIPA is proud to be able to partner with DOLA and contribute to projects like this; partnering in connecting (literally) residents of Colorado to online information and services.

We are less than a year away from data collection for the 2020 Census.  Many of your organizations in the state have been preparing for Census Day. See below for details:

  • The Colorado Department of Local Affairs' (DOLA) State Demography Office will have approximately $200,000 to support the purchase of promotional material as well as other outreach services.  Detailed information will be available in June with purchases starting in after July 1.  Start thinking about which items you are interested in for your community.
  • DOLA will also be launching a Census Outreach Grant Program to distribute the approximately $6 million allocated in HB19-1239.  The census outreach grant program is created to provide grants to local governments, intergovernmental agencies, councils of government, housing authorities, school districts, and nonprofit organizations to support the accurate counting of the population of the state for the 2020 Census, in hard-to-count communities.
