The entire Silt community is invited on Saturday to join with Silt Trustee Sam Walls and his friends Randy Murr, Ray Cross, Donny Lente and the Town of Silt when they host a dedication ceremony for the newly reconditioned and re-installed flagpole in Veteran’s Memorial Park. The ceremony, complete with a Color Guard, a singing of the National Anthem and a presentation on the history of the flag will occur at 11 AM on Saturday November 14 at Veteran’s Memorial Park, rain, snow or shine.
Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the four dedicated men who made the vision a reality, the Town of Silt will have a newly refurbished flagpole in Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Town Trustee Walls this fall noticed the flagpole’s state of decay and decided it was time for the it to be gussied up. He hatched a plan and approached Town officials for clearance. Walls then enlisted fellow tradesmen Randy Murr of Murr Welding, Ray Cross of Grand Valley Powder Coating and Native American Crane’s Donny Lente to remove and transport the flagpole, refurbish its fittings, fill the holes, provide a fresh powder coating and reinstall it in its base. The work was finished and complete by Veterans Day.
Originally installed in the mid 80’s, the flagpole had deteriorated over time. The pole served as a sign post at Cecil Carpenter’s Shell station at 8th and Main for many years. Carpenter donated the unneeded pole to the Town to replace the original flagpole in the park. The original pole was installed in 1947 or ’48 when the park was developed to memorialize those lost to the Nation’s wars. According to life-long local Mary Montover, many of the trees in the park were planted to honor a fallen service member.
Efforts are also underway to raise funds to refurbish the base of the flagpole, which is solid, according to Walls, but lacks the beauty that befits the flag for which it serves. Walls says he hopes to complete that project next summer.
Any questions or comments can be directed to the Town of Silt at 970-876-2353.

Public Works to begin Fall Hydrant Flushing
The Town of Silt’s Public Works crew will begin its semi-annual fire hydrant flushing work within the next couple of weeks. The task involves the quick release of water from fire hydrants to ensure the adequate flow of water is available to fire fighters, residents and businesses. The maintenance work also improves water quality by clearing iron and other mineral deposits from the water mains.
Should you have questions, please call Public Works Director Trey Fonner at 970-876-2353, extension 106.

Come out and join with fellow Silt volunteers and get yourself some Christmas spirit! Downtown merchants are looking for a handful of dedicated folks to help decorate Main Street for Christmas! Volunteers will be stringing decorative lights around the tree trunks of the trees lining Main Street’s sidewalks. No work requiring use of a ladder is to be done.
Everyone participating will get a gift certificate to Misty’s Coffee and a bag of swag from the Town, and all who spend at least three hours helping out will have their names entered into a drawing for a $75 Miner’s Claim gift certificate!
The fun will start on Tuesday, November 17th at 4pm, and should wrap up by the end of the day on Wednesday, November 18th.
