COMPAS: What's in it for me?
The COMPAS project will have far reaching implications for many state employees with the ultimate goal to replace the state’s legacy mainframe payroll system with a modern cloud-based solution and new employee self-service functionality. This project will impact finance and payroll specialists, human resources professionals, and individual state employees.
So, as an individual, you might ask yourself “what’s in it for me?” Depending upon the role of individual employees, you will be impacted in different ways based upon the project initiatives. Overall, the project team aims to increase efficiency and user experience, reduce manual work loads, and improve data security. Some of the unique changes based on role are outlined in the project initiatives below.
- Save time for employees by reducing manual processes and increase task efficiency for payroll, finance, and HR professionals in state agencies
- Improve data integrity and increase data security
- Foster consistency by standardizing business processes across agencies and departments, aligning processes with HR best practices and law statewide
- Continue to provide the state's 36,000+ employees with accurate and timely pay
Are you curious for more details about specific changes to your work? We encourage you to review the FAQs on our project website, reach out to your team leadership, or contact the project team at SoC_COMPAS@state.co.us.

The Buzz about Employee Self-Service
Did you know that COMPAS will replace the State’s existing Employee Self-Service platform? This change will impact most, if not all, State employees. While final design details are still in the works, we do know that through COMPAS Employee Self-Service, employees will have access to view and maintain more employee information than they do today. This includes maintaining information such as name and address, emergency contacts, direct deposit information, and even completing W4s (subject to review by HR and payroll professionals)!
The COMPAS Team demonstrated the new Employee Self-Service module during Office Hours on August 8th. Check out the ESS demo here (note, you can slow down the video by selecting a slower playback speed within the recording window). The demonstration generated a lot of interest and sparked many stakeholder questions. These questions, and their answers, have been added to the FAQ section of the COMPAS project website.

COMPAS provides features that make work easier. Activity Folders are one example. Activity Folders group related functions together making it easier for users to complete their work from one location rather than having to navigate to multiple pages and transactions.
One example is the Position Management (POSM) activity folder, shown below.
The POSM activity folder provides a comprehensive view of position-related data organized into several tabs:
-
Position – provides read only summary information about the position
-
Position Status Maintenance – provides access to view, create, or modify position attributes, including the position’s status and profile details.
-
Position Employee Roster – shows a list of employees assigned to the position, including details such as Employee/Appointment ID, Name, Employment Status, Title/Sub-Title, and Percent Full-Time.
-
Position Authorization Maintenance - used to view, create, or modify authorizations that define the number of incumbents and allowable Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) for a position.
Activity folders are just one COMPAS feature that busy HR professionals will find useful!
