Trail Guides
The Trail Guide team continues to inform work prioritization by detailing The What and The Why (the business needs) for the PIT crew. The PIT crew then guides our implementation partners – including the CGI and AdHoc vendor teams – to configure the system. Then we bring The How back to the Trail Guides for validation and feedback. We are following the practices set forth in agile methodology which outlines iterative development and relies on constant and consistent validation and structured feedback.
The Trail Guide team is divided into two phases. Phase One is active and is guiding Position Control and Management, HRM/Employee, and initial Paycheck work. Phase Two will be activated in the coming months focused on advanced Paycheck and Labor Allocation functionality. Together the teams represent 12 agencies and departments across all three branches of government.
Keep an eye on the COMPAS website for packaged report outs of the Trail Guide work, feedback and guidance. As we reach significant milestones, the artifacts will be linked on the website as well. Happy Hiking!

Trailblazer and Usability Testing
We have identified fun, helpful, and cool ways for stakeholders to participate in and provide valuable feedback to the project. The Trailblazer team will get an early look at the new payroll system and offer feedback to help us clear the path for users. Each testing session will take about an hour or less with no need to prepare anything – we just want your curiosity and a willingness to participate in building the product you want to use.
Why Do Usability Testing:
- The goal of usability testing is to make a system efficient and easy to use for everybody. Usability participants are like scouts that blaze the trail ahead, ensuring the path is safe and enjoyable for future hikers.
- We want a system that works well for all types of users, not just one group. Diverse feedback helps us scout many different routes for others to follow. Different Hikers, Different Views.
How Unmoderated Usability Testing Works:
You will explore the system independently – interacting with the system naturally and as you see fit. This differs from QA testing, where we will deliberately search for problems or errors.
- All testers will begin their journey from a common starting point, like a trailhead, with a map and compass. Like solo hikers exploring different paths independently.
- Like hikers noting obstacles, detours, and scenic views, your interactions are automatically recorded (clicks, navigation paths, time spent). This means there will be no need to take or provide notes.
- Sessions take an hour or less, and only require a quiet and comfortable place to work with a mic and wifi.
What We Do with the Data:
Common struggles will be noted including patterns in navigation, creating a Master Trail Map by compiling all Trailblazers’ notes to create one comprehensive map of the payroll system.
- Issues will be ranked by impact and frequency, which allows us to prioritize which trail obstacles need clearing first for overall safety and enjoyment.
- We plan to share findings and improvements with participants and interested parties, like updating a community of hikers about trail conditions and improvements.
We need your pioneering spirit to navigate the new payroll system. Sign up by sending an email to SoC_compas@state.co.us to be a Trailblazer – part of usability testing and even more involved in building the product you want to use.
