New Law Prompts Changes for Social Workers

Dear Stakeholder:

The July 14, 2020 signing into law of House Bill 20-1206, Sunset Mental Health Professionals has prompted changes affecting professional Social Workers in Colorado.

Specifically, the bill:

  • Creates a clinical social worker candidate registration.
  • Clarifies and defines clinical supervision and requirements for social workers and mode of supervision (e.g. telesupervision, virtual, etc.).
  • Clarifies that course work provided by an accredited educational institution or recognized professional organization is the only continuing competency activity that, on its own, fully satisfies the continuing competency requirements for Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers. The continuing competency requirement may still be attained via a combination of activities, such as self assessments, learning plans, professional development hours, and more.

Those affected by these changes are encouraged to read the entire text of HB20-1206, since other alterations general to the mental health profession also are included within this new law.

Implementation of these changes is in process. Please visit the Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners website for the latest information, as it becomes available. Questions may be referred to dpo@state.co.us. Thank you.
