Welcome to this week’s Bulletin - your quick source for Division updates, events, and opportunities.
Update on HB 26-1109 (Sign Language Consumer Protection Study): This bill would fund a study on whether additional consumer protections are needed for sign language interpretation services. Last week, the bill passed the House and it is now moving to the Senate. You can contact state legislators to tell them what you think about the bill. You also can track the bill’s status through the provided link above.
If the Legislature (House and Senate) passes the bill, it goes to the Governor (head of the Executive Branch) for final action. The Governor can sign the bill, take no action and allow it to become law, or veto (reject) the bill. Division staff are part of the Executive Branch. Currently, our only role is to provide facts and answer technical questions relating to the bill.
National Deaf History Month: We are proud to celebrate National Deaf History Month this April. Did you know that it wasn’t until the 1960s that linguists recognized American Sign Language (ASL) as a true language? It took a linguistic revolution to show ASL is a sophisticated, complete language with its own grammar and syntax. This month, we honor that rich heritage and the generations of advocacy in building a more accessible and inclusive world.

Try a New SSP Promo: Support Service Providers (SSPs) assist DeafBlind adults with communication and environmental information during community activities. This April, we are launching the “Try a New SSP” initiative to help consumers build a more diverse and flexible support network. Running from April 1 through May 1, this promotion offers two free assignments (up to two hours each) with an SSP the consumer has never worked with before. Whether consumers want to request someone specific or let us "surprise" them with a new match, these hours will not count against personal hours, and extra time can be added if needed. The Connection Hour’s April Edition (Sign Language Interpreters' Network Event): Join us on Denver’s east side to strengthen the ties between interpreters and the community they support.
