“We” and “Us” – Language Choices to Help All of Us Age Well

roberto

The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging has begun the work around reframing aging. This initiative's goal is to communicate strategically to help foster positive attitudes about aging and older adults. Based on FrameWorks Institute's research, many of the strategies are simple yet powerful. One such strategy is using the pronouns we and us when talking about people 60+. For example, compare the sentence, "It’s important to create a community where older adults can age well," with this slightly modified version, "It’s important to create a community where all of us can age well." The first version may inadvertently suggest that older adults are somehow separate from everyone else—that older adults are an “other.” The second version, with its use of the pronoun us, suggests that older adults are part of a collective community (we all age; and older adults are our friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and sometimes ourselves). Simply using such pronouns help people think about aging and older adults in more positive ways than they might otherwise. This and other reframing strategies help us combat ageism (discrimination based on age due to negative and inaccurate stereotypes). This is good news for everyone who wants to age well!

Census 2020: Everyone Counts

census

The 2020 Census is observed nationwide on April 1, 2020 and Boulder county is working on efforts to ensure that the State of Colorado has a complete count by informing and educating the community on the long-term positive impacts our participation can bring to our communities.

Invitations to participate in the 2020 Census will be delivered between March 12-20. Once you receive the invitation, you can respond on-line, by phone, or mail. The U.S. Census Bureau will never ask you for your social security number, banking information, money/donations, or anything on behalf of a political party. If someone claiming to be from the U.S. Census Bureau knocks at your door, you can verify their legitimacy by making sure they have a valid ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.

If you suspect fraud, call the Census Bureau at 800-923-8282 to speak with a representative about your suspicions. If it is determined that the person who came to your door does not work for the Census Bureau, please file a police report with your local police department.

Featured Volunteers: It Takes a Village

sri

Pictured above are volunteers, Sridhar Koakula and Sridhar's family.

Many of our programs and projects would not be feasible if we did not have volunteers. Last Spring, we embarked on a new program of distribution of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). This program provided boxes of produce from a local farm to our older adults. Our grant from LiveWell Colorado paid for the boxes, and BCAAA had to figure out how to get the produce from the farm to the distribution site at the Walt Self building in Lyons. The caveat was that the only pick-up day and time was Saturday at noon. Furthermore, the produce did not come ready to pick-up in boxes, making this a very involved task in terms of operations and logistics. Committed volunteers counted and weighed the produce to make this program possible!

We were very fortunate that there were residents of Lyons and Boulder County employees (doing their Institute of Public Service volunteer service time), and one former Aging Services Foundation board member to help us out. Thank you to our 2019 volunteers! The program will continue in 2020!
