Together we made great progress in 2023 confronting environmental challenges at home and across the world. And our progress is only possible thanks to visionary leaders and groups working together across the state, driving new and meaningful ways of doing things.
Now, more than ever, we’re committed to maintaining this progress and collaboration in the New Year, even as we work through the current budget conditions. Secretary Crowfoot shares his thoughts on 2024 in the video above and provides a sneak peek into his key priorities for the year in a short blog post below.
California Native American tribes are leading the way conserving California’s lands for future generations and we are proud to support this leadership and help enable the return of Hupa Mountain property to the Hoopa Valley Tribe. Tribal communities have cared for these lands since time immemorial, and we look forward to furthering this charge in the New Year and in years to come.
California is leading the world in combating climate change, and meeting our ambitious targets requires building a new generation of infrastructure. This means we need to build more solar and wind power, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging capacity options to meet our 100% clean energy targets. And it means protecting communities from climate impacts by building more flood protection infrastructure, water recycling plants, wildfire fuel breaks and many others.
Governor Newsom is accelerating this work through an Executive Order, legislative reform and now build.ca.gov -- a helpful new website that shares a snapshot of what’s happening around the state.
At the end of last year, California expanded outdoor access across the state by funding more than $41 million for new parks and open spaces in communities that need them most. And this builds on an incredible portfolio of work already underway. Later this month, stay tuned for a Secretary Speakers Series dedicated to diving into this great work further.
As part of Exposition Park, our agency is proud to include the California Science Center, which makes national news this week as it stands up the Space Shuttle Endeavour for the first time, on track to become the only upright shuttle display in the world. The Science Center is one of Southern California’s most visited attractions, hosting thousands of school kids from greater Los Angeles every day. The free museum is one more way we’re working to help all Californians grow and thrive.
