walnut creek city managers update - from the desk of city manager dan bukshi

April 20, 2020

We're more than a month into the shelter at home order, and phrases such as "social distancing" and "flattening the curve" are now part of our common culture.  Many City employees have joined the ranks of working from home, and as one of them, I can tell you that it has taken some time to get used to the new routine.  I wanted to share a few updates below, and to thank you for doing your part by staying at home.

Please forward this email to others who might want to receive our City updates, and encourage them to become subscribers.  The registration page can be found by selecting the eNotifications link on the upper right corner of our homepage

City Council meets on Tuesday via Zoom

Council Chamber remote meeting

The City Council will meet tomorrow evening, April 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  I will be providing an update on the impacts of COVID-19 on our City operations, staff and services.  The Council will also hear an update on the  City's financial situation.  The dramatic loss of revenue in the final months of our fiscal year presents challenges and the need for difficult decisions.

Our public meetings are now conducted using Zoom videoconferencing.  Public comments are still welcome before and during our Council meetings.  Please visit our public meeting webpage to view the agenda and Council reports, to provide public comment in advance of the meeting, or to learn how you can participate during the meeting.

New County Health Order this week

Meal delivery

Effective Wednesday morning, it will be necessary to wear a face covering when you are conducting essential business outside of your home.  This is a shift in guidance from early on during the outbreak.  Many people who carry the virus show no obvious symptoms, so people may unknowingly be carriers.  Please visit the County Health Department's coronavirus website to read the Health Order in its entirety.  Homemade face coverings are fine if you don't have a more traditional mask.  Find out how to make them at the CDC's website.

How to find out which businesses are open

We are grateful to the many essential businesses that are staying open during this challenging time. It can be difficult to know which grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, hardware stores and other businesses are open, and what their hours are.  Walnut Creek is making it easier for you.  We have launched a new searchable, map-based website that will let you find out if your favorite restaurant is offering takeout meals, if your car repair shop is open, and where you can get groceries.  Visit our Essential Business webpage for details.

Open for Business

City facilities closed; City operations continue - including our Arts and Recreation programs

Virtual arts and rec

We also know that many people are missing our arts and recreation programs.  Our team has quickly taken many of our classes to a virtual learning platform.  Center for Community Arts will be offering more than 60 Zoom-based online arts classes this spring.  Find specialized classes in drawing, painting, digital media, dance, music, drama, creative writing and more. Join Community Arts’ teaching artists in hands-on arts classes and be part of building community online through the process of creating together.  Registration is open now; visit the Community Arts website for details.

City and County websites providing frequent updates

health

The City is working closely with the County Health Services Department for updates on the outbreak of the virus and its impacts.  The City has launched a one-stop shop website for information about affected programs and services, and offers other resources for residents that are specific to our community.  You can also find links to critical information from the CDC and other public agencies.  For the latest on the local impacts of the virus, as well as guidelines enacted under the Public Health Officer's Shelter in Place at Home order, we encourage you to regularly visit the County's coronavirus website.
