SUPERVISOR MONICA BROWN JULY 2019 NEWSLETTER

Hello Benicia, Fairfield and Vallejo,

Welcome to my July Newsletter! I want to provide you with an update about what has been happening since our last newsletter. I am always here for you. If I can be of any assistance, please contact me at 707-784-3031 or at mebrown@solanocounty.com.

BENICIA TORCHLIGHT PARADE

It was so much fun to participate in the Benicia Torchlight Parade on Wednesday July 3rd. The parade was so exciting and well attended. Thank you so much to Benicia Main Street for putting on such a great event every year.

VALLEJO 4TH OF JULY PARADE

I had a great time being a part of the Vallejo 4th of July parade. Going from Broadway to the waterfront gives those marching an excellent opportunity to see Vallejo and so many of Vallejo’s residents.

VALLEJO ADMIRALS 4TH OF JULY GAME

After the 4th of July parade, I enjoyed going to a Vallejo Admirals game at Wilson Park. The weather was great, the hot dog was delicious, and it was great to see so many community members turn out for our local team on a holiday! If you have not been to an Admirals game before, please support our local team! https://vallejoadmirals.com/

BENICIA SISTER CITIES EVENT

I enjoyed the Benicia Sister Cities dinner on Saturday July 6th. I was happy to be a $250 sponsor.

SUPPORTING SOLANO COUNTY’S FARMERS

Solano County’s Walnut output decreased by millions of dollars. This is in large part due to the trade war initiated by the tariffs put on imported goods. Other countries are retaliating with tariffs, making American farm products more expensive and thus less competitive. This is seriously hurting our farmers. 12 billion dollars in assistance was provided to farmers impacted by the trade war. Walnuts were not included in the original assistance.

I sent a letter to Congressmembers Garamendi and Thompson requesting that they seek to get the federal government to provide retroactive payments to our walnut growers. The exclusion of walnuts was not fair to California and Solano County specifically.

Agriculture is important to Solano County’s economy and it is important that we do what we can to receive our fair share.

LIGHTS OF LIBERTY EVENT IN BENICIA

The Lights of Liberty event was a protest of the attack on immigrants in America. It was held at city park in Benicia. I was honored to be asked to speak about the work I have done to protect immigrants in Solano County.

VALLEJO GAY NETWORK POTLUCK ON MARE ISLAND

I had an amazing time at the monthly Vallejo Gay Network at the Mare Island home of Wendell Quigley and Manny Furtado. The potluck took place on July Saturday July 13.

VALLEJO ADMIRALS

The Admirals won on Saturday July 13! I had so much fun at this game and it’s always good to see our team win. Please come support them if you can.

GODDESS EVENT

Vallejo resident Lisa Gutierrez-Wilson hosted her annual goddess event on Saturday July 20. This was an event for informal event for local women to get to know each other. The event was a blast and I very much appreciate Lisa opening her home to the community.

ASSEMBLYMEMBER CECILIA AGUIAR-CURRY IN GREEN VALLEY

Along with several Green Valley residents, I gave Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry a tour of Green Valley on Monday July 22nd. Specifically, we toured the Green Valley Creek along with Roland Sanford of the Solano County Water Agency.

We are in discussions with the Water Agency to do flood prevention at the Green Valley Creek. Also, the Assemblymember requested a feasibility study to determine the full extent of the need for flood prevention. Thank you to the Assemblymember, Roland and the residents of Green Valley who coordinated this tour with us.

PUPS AT THE PARK

On July 23, I enjoyed being at Pups at the Park at the Vallejo Admirals game. This was an event that was sponsored by the Humane Society to promote dog adoptions. We played the Salina Stockade and won 7-0!

BENICIA CAMEL BARN CONCERT

On Friday the 26th, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Golden Bough (Celtic Music) in concert.

OBTAINIUM CUP IN VALLEJO

There was fun to be had by all at the Obtainium Cup event on Mare Island. It was a beautiful day and I had the privilege of sitting in some of the vehicles before they raced.

If you live in Benicia or Vallejo, Congressperson Thompson is your Congressperson (https://mikethompson.house.gov/services/academy-nominations). STATE REDISTRICTING COMMISSION

The state is currently accepting applications for the Independent Redistricting Commission that will draw the boundaries for the Legislature and Congress. If you are interested, please click this link.

I tried to implement a similar commission in Solano County to draw the supervisorial lines, rather than have the Board of Supervisors draw them. Only Supervisor Thomson supported my proposal. Those who benefit the most from district lines should not be tasked with determining those lines.

Senate Bill 139 is currently pending in the legislature. SB 139 would require counties with more than 250,000 residents to create a commission like the one I tried to create. I was honored to testify in support of SB 139 this past April.
