San Mateo County Youth Commission November Update!

Message from Youth Commission Chair: Amani Shroff

My name is Amani, and I’m honored to serve as the Chair of the San Mateo County Youth Commission. I’ve been a commissioner for three years and am currently part of the Civic Engagement Subcommittee.

The Youth Commission is an advisory body to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, created to ensure that youth voices are heard in local government. Our 25 commissioners, ages 13–21, work together to design programs, host events, and recommend policy based on the needs and perspectives of young people throughout the county.

This year, our work is centered around five subcommittees: civic engagement, increasing youth participation in government, educational equity, advancing opportunities and support for students across schools, environment and sustainability, focusing on climate action, conservation, and sustainable practices, and health, promoting both physical and mental health resources for youth.

We’re excited for the year ahead and have several events planned, including a commission-wide event in January. Our full commission meets on the second Thursday of each month, and we encourage community members to join us and share their voices.

Summer Retreat Recap

In August 2025, the San Mateo County Youth Commission hosted their annual Fall Retreat. At this event, new and returning commissioners were sworn in and learned more about their responsibilities as Youth Commissioners, with plenty of team bonding interweaved. The retreat concluded with a networking event, where commissioners got to meet and have conversations with the other commissions and boards from San Mateo County.
