County Launches Town Halls to Address Child Care Crisis
The first in a series of Child Care Town Halls takes place tonight, Thursday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at the South San Francisco Library/Parks & Recreation Center, 901 Civic Campus Way. Families and providers are invited to attend and share their experiences and ideas for making child care more affordable and accessible. A kids’ corner for potty-trained children age 2.5+ will be available, subject to capacity, with RSVPs required. A second town hall will follow on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at EPACENTER, 1950 Bay Road, East Palo Alto.

County Marks Milestone for North County Wellness Center
San Mateo County celebrated the completion of the North County Wellness Center's structural framework on Aug. 5 with a topping off ceremony. Joined by the Board of Supervisors, the event honored construction crews, contractor XL Construction and architect SmithGroup. The future center in South San Francisco will house health care, dental services and other County programs. The project broke ground in August 2024, with completion expected in 2026 and an opening in early 2027.

Registration Opens for County’s Civics 101 Academy
The County of San Mateo is now accepting applications for its free Civics 101 Academy, a nine-week program offering residents a behind-the-scenes look at how County government works. Starting in September, participants will meet department heads, explore topics from public safety to parks, elections to libraries, and learn how to get involved in shaping their community’s future. The sessions take place one evening a week in Redwood City, with snacks provided. Space is limited — apply now here.

Public Removal Hearing for Sheriff to Begin Aug. 18
The public removal hearing for San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus is scheduled to begin 9 a.m. Aug. 18 in the Hall of Justice at 400 County Center, Redwood City. Retired Judge James Emerson will preside over the hearing, expected to span 10 days. County supervisors voted 5-0 at a June 24 public meeting to accept a recommendation to proceed with removing Sheriff Corpus from office. The vote follows a process voters authorized the Board to develop and implement under Measure A.

Career Seekers Invited to County’s Career Fair
The County of San Mateo, in partnership with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, will host the 2025 Summer Public Service Career Fair on Friday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 500 County Center in Redwood City. The event will feature hiring teams from County departments and regional public sector agencies recruiting for roles in healthcare, social work, skilled trades, public safety, administration, and more. Attendees can receive one-on-one application tips from County talent acquisition recruiters. Admission and parking are free; RSVPs required.
