Supervisors Vote to Expand Legal Aid for Immigrants
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at its June 10 meeting voted unanimously to increase funding for legal services supporting immigrant residents. The Board approved nearly $1.75 million in agreements with the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County to provide Affirmative, Removal Defense and Rapid Response Legal Services from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The funding includes $533,964 for rapid response efforts that support immigrants facing urgent legal needs. The Board also approved a waiver of the competitive bidding process to ensure continued, uninterrupted legal support.

County Parks Celebrates Flood Park Renovations
San Mateo County’s historic Flood Park reopened June 7 with a ribbon cutting to celebrate exciting new features and a groundbreaking for a modern playground. The 21-acre park in Menlo Park now boasts sand volleyball, pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, multi-use fields, picnic areas and shaded oak trails. The renovation, funded by Measure K and County funds, is the park’s most significant update in 40 years. The transformation follows years of planning through the Reimagine Flood Park initiative, which called for upgrades and recreational amenities, all while preserving the park’s oak woodland.

County Leads Effort to Break Cycle of Domestic Violence
Launched by the County of San Mateo in 2023 and led by the District Attorney’s Office, the SPARK (Shaping Positive and Resilient Kids) program aims to break generational cycles of domestic violence through early intervention and support. In partnership with CORA, the program connects families—often referred by law enforcement—to free, trauma-informed mental health services and personalized care. Early results show a 62 percent increase in children receiving services, a 78 percent drop in trauma symptoms among those who completed treatment, and intensive case management from the Victim Services Division in the District Attorney’s Office for 241 adult survivors.

Resource Fair Celebrates Immigrant Heritage Month
The County's Office of Community Affairs will host a free Community Resource Fair on June 21 in honor of Immigrant Heritage Month. At its June 10 meeting, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed June 2025 as Immigrant Heritage Month, recognizing immigrants' experiences and contributions to the county’s history. The fair will feature food trucks and music and offer an opportunity to learn about programs and resources available to county residents. Residents are invited to share their immigration stories through this form, with select reflections featured at the event and on social media.

Sheriff's Office to Host Fireworks Buyback Event
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will host a fireworks buyback event on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its new substation located at 690 Broadway in Redwood City. Residents can anonymously turn in illegal fireworks and receive up to $200 in return. Fireworks are illegal throughout San Mateo County, except in the cities of Pacifica and San Bruno. The effort aims to enhance public safety ahead of July Fourth and reduce fireworks-related incidents. All collected fireworks will be safely disposed of by bomb technicians and fire personnel.
