Free Family-Friendly Event Highlights Wildfire Prep, Tips
Everyone who lives, works or visits San Mateo County is invited to the County's first-ever Be Wildfire Safe & Ready event on Saturday, April 26, at the San Mateo County Event Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event includes panel discussions with experts on how to take steps to protect your home from wildfires, develop an evacuation plan and pack a “Go Bag." Kid activity stations, photo opportunities with Smokey Bear and Captain Cal, resource tables on pet preparedness, fire resistant landscaping, home insurance and more are all part of the event's agenda.

Jasneet W. Sharma Appointed Director of Sustainability
The Board of Supervisors confirmed the appointment of Jasneet Waraich Sharma at their meeting on Earth Day to lead the County’s efforts to combat climate change, reduce waste and build a sustainable future. Sharma brings a wealth of experience to her new role as director of the Sustainability Department, where she will oversee about 40 employees and a $20 million annual budget. Sharma’s appointment is a homecoming: she worked for the County as a senior community health planner and senior climate resiliency specialist from 2014 until she left in 2019 to lead Santa Clara County’s sustainability efforts.

Residents Invited to Celebrate County History, New Building
The County of San Mateo and San Mateo County History Museum are hosting "Celebrating Our Story," a special event on May 15, 2025, honoring the 169th anniversary of San Mateo County and the dedication of 500 County Center in Redwood City. Residents are invited to attend the event, which will include historical reenactments, a plaque unveiling, live music by DJ John Beaver, kids' crafts and more. The free event will begin at 5 p.m. at the San Mateo County History Museum with a procession to 500 County Center to follow. RSVP to bmurdock@smcgov.org or 650-363-4572.

Behavioral Health Launches Mobile Crisis Response Team
Residents experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis can now call the San Mateo County Crisis Line at 650-579-0350 for 24/7 in-person support from a mobile response team of mental health clinicians able to connect them to appropriate services. The service provides an alternative to traditional law enforcement response. "We want to make sure it’s clear that no matter when or where in the county you are dealing with a behavioral health crisis, there is appropriate support available, and it can come to you when you need it most," said director of Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Dr. Jei Africa.

County Celebrates Earth Day at Several Community Events
San Mateo County Parks and the County's Sustainability Department are tabling and hosting events at multiple Earth Day opportunities this weekend. Residents are invited to learn more about the Sustainability Department's programs on Saturday, April 26, at the PelicanFest in Pacifica, Love Our Earth Fest in Menlo Park or the San Mateo Earth Day Cleanup Event in San Mateo. Also that day, volunteers will be planting poppies at Edgewood Park and San Mateo County Parks Volunteer Stewardship is hosting a clean up at the Don Horsley Park at Tunitas Creek Beach.

County Recognizes Child Abuse Prevention Month
The County's Human Services Agency received a proclamation from the Board of Supervisors designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to strengthen families and prevent child abuse. At the April 22 meeting, the Child Abuse Prevention Council also provided an update on the work they do coordinating resources and advocating for supports to prevent child abuse. Also on that day, the Children’s Memorial Flag was raised at County Center in Redwood City as a solemn reminder of children who have lost their lives to violence.
