Redwood City — The Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting Friday, March 27 to consider a proposal to provide BART $10,321, 678 to install 82 state-of-the-art fare gates at five stations located in San Mateo County.
The proposed work is part of a $90 million systemwide replacement of BART’s existing and aging fare gates. Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and Santa Clara County transportation authorities have contributed their county funding shares.
Locally, the San Mateo County Transit Agency (SMCTA) is responsible for overseeing and allocating funds for transportation projects in San Mateo County. BART plans to apply for a grant from the SMCTA’s Measure W Regional Transit Connection Program to cover the cost of the project at the Colma, Daly City, Millbrae, San Bruno, and South San Francisco stations, but won’t learn until mid- to late summer 2025 if the grant will be received. However, BART must give notice by March 31, 2025, to its contractor whether the San Mateo County stations will be included in the project. Thus, the Board tomorrow will consider providing BART the needed funds should it not receive the grant.
The Board of Supervisors meets at 4 p.m. Friday, March 28 in Board Chambers, 500 County Center, Redwood City. The meeting will be held virtually and in person. The agenda and Zoom link is available here.
