Redwood City – San Mateo County Airports is thrilled to share exciting news about the expansion of unleaded aviation gasoline at San Carlos and Half Moon Bay Airports.
This week, the San Carlos Flight Center and Rabbit Aviation Services received the first delivery of Swift Fuels “100R” high-octane unleaded aviation gasoline at the San Carlos Airport. The San Carlos Flight Center has certified its fleet of Cessna 172 aircraft to run exclusively on 100R for operations at the San Carlos and Half Moon Bay Airports for several months. After this initial period, we expect 100R to be certified for use in additional aircraft makes and models.
As background, in 2016, in partnership with the Board of Supervisors and Rabbit Aviation Services, San Carlos Airport became the first in California to offer Swift Fuels “UL94” unleaded aviation gasoline. Since then, three flight schools at San Carlos Airport have successfully certified their entire fleet to operate exclusively on UL94. This certification process involves purchasing a Supplemental Type Certificate and working with a mechanic to inspect and authorize each aircraft to use UL94. While many aircraft can be certified to use UL94, not all are eligible. To help expand the availability and use of unleaded aviation fuel, Airports is also pleased to announce that UL94 will be available for sale at Half Moon Bay Airport in the coming weeks.
The aviation industry eagerly awaits the approval of a high-octane unleaded gasoline for all general aviation aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set a goal to certify such a fuel by 2030. As a step toward this, last month, the FAA certified Swift Fuels "100-R" unleaded aviation gasoline for use in a specific aircraft model, the Cessna 172-R.
