Public Invited to Observe Election Audit Process
The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division will start the One Percent Manual Tally of votes from the Presidential General Election on Nov. 12, 2024, at 9 a.m. The audit process is a mandatory election canvassing procedure conducted after polls close on Election Day to verify the accuracy of the vote count before certifying the official results. The process starts with the random selection of batches from both Vote by Mail ballots and Vote Center ballots. This selection is determined by rolling dice, and the resulting numbers are matched to a corresponding batch. Members of the public are encouraged to observe the tally or participate in the selection process.

Report Points to County's Commitment to Mental Health
In a new report, San Mateo County Health’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) division reflects on two decades of service transformation thanks to funding from the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA). "The passing of MHSA was a defining moment for California residents living with mental health and substance use challenges, their families, and the broader community,” said BHRS Director Dr. Jei Africa. “Support from MHSA has transformed public behavioral health systems and services throughout the state, aligning with BHRS's mission and positively impacting clients’ lives.”

Small Beetle Poses Big Threat to Trees in San Mateo County
The presence of an invasive beetle has been confirmed in the Redwood Shores community of Redwood City, according to the San Mateo County Department of Agriculture. Known as the shothole borer (ISHB), infestations of the pest have also been found in neighboring Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. The San Mateo County Department of Agriculture is conducting additional surveys & trapping to assess the scope of the infestation locally. Signs of the beetle include tiny entry holes or a thick resin on infested trees. Residents can report ISHB sightings and infestation by completing the ISHB Detection Assessment or calling the Department of Ag at (650) 363-4700.

Sheriff's Office Offers Women Self-Empowerment Training
An innovative new program at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Maple Street Correctional Center is helping incarcerated women accept and overcome their past challenges, while empowering them to rebuild their lives. The program is part of the Sheriff's Office’s effort to reduce recidivism and create successful paths forward for incarcerated persons upon release from jail. The inaugural “Women’s Self-Empowerment Program,” led by leadership coach Amy Kelly Lauer, culminated on Nov. 4, 2024, with 12 women receiving certificates of completion. The program is expected to continue on a quarterly basis.

ADU Resource Center Helps Create New Housing Units
The launch of the ADU Resource Center of San Mateo County promises to help homeowners and jurisdictions build more Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) with step-by-step instructions and to create more diverse housing opportunities in the county. A collaboration between the County of San Mateo and local jurisdictions and foundations, the Center supports residents in navigating the entire process of building an ADU from design and permitting to construction and move-in. The County's Department of Housing and Planning & Building Department provided early support to this effort in 2022, when the need for a staffed ADU Resource Center was first identified.
