County Health Recommends COVID-19 Prevention Tips
With COVID-19 levels rising in San Mateo County and the region, County Health recommends being up to date with vaccines, staying at home if you are sick, testing if you have symptoms, and to consider wearing a mask. COVID-19 vaccines continue to be the best defense against severe illness and death. If you do get sick with COVID-19, talk to your health care provider about treatment. Applications Open for Fall 2024 Civics 101 Academy
Curious about how the wheels of local government turn? Want to know where your tax dollars are being spent? Civics 101 gives participants the chance to learn from County leaders, including elected officials, ask questions and network with fellow classmates. The free annual academy hosted by the County of San Mateo is currently accepting applications for its Fall 2024 class. A hike in Edgewood Park, K-9 demonstration and short mock trial are all part of the fun. Sessions meet for nine consecutive Wednesday evenings starting Sept. 4.

Child Support Raises Awareness on Services
The San Mateo County Child Support Services Department is celebrating Child Support Awareness Month this August, a time to spread the word about child support services and programs. The department serves the public by partnering with parents to achieve the financial commitment toward their children in a fair and equitable manner. Throughout the month, the Family Law Facilitator will hold more Friday afternoon appointments specifically for Child Support Services clients.

The Big Lift Launches New Website for Young Readers
The Big Lift launched a new website, Let’s Read San Mateo County, to support young readers and parents. In partnership with Oakland Reads, the new website includes information about specific reading milestones students should achieve at each grade level, local resources for children with reading disabilities and more. The Big Lift, an early childhood learning program focused on increasing reading proficiency, is an initiative of the County of San Mateo, County Libraries and San Mateo County Office of Education.

County Recruits for Domestic Violence Task Force
Recruitment is now open for the County of San Mateo’s first Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team. The pilot program embeds trained advocates with law enforcement to help ensure survivors get the services they need by connecting with victims at the scene of a call. There are three open positions for advocates who will serve North Fair Oaks, Daly City and San Mateo. Domestic violence survivors are particularly encouraged to apply if they meet the eligibility requirements. Advocates will be hired and supervised by CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse).

County Parks Hosts Annual SummerFest at Coyote Point
Giant kites, face painting, dance performances and train rides are all part of the festivities planned for the San Mateo County Parks Department's SummerFest: A Community Celebration this Saturday, August 10, at Coyote Point Recreation Area. Attendees can also visit resource booths from local organizations and enjoy food and drinks from food truck vendors. Information on the Revitalize Coyote Point Concept Plans will also be available for review and comment. All performances and activities are free with a $6 vehicle entrance fee.
