County Launches New Mental Health Crisis Response
Residents dealing with a mental or behavioral health crisis will soon be able to request a mobile response team with specialists in de-escalation who can connect individuals to appropriate services. The Board of Supervisors at its Feb. 27, 2024, meeting approved a nearly $5 million contract to Telecare Corp., which will work with nonprofit StarVista to operate the new response system. The specialized teams will provide a countywide alternative to armed law enforcement response in a first for San Mateo County. The service will begin in May before fully ramping up by August.

Women's View Offers Insight Into Artists' Creative Process
Women’s View 2024, on display in the Caldwell Gallery on the County Center campus through April 26, features 46 works by local women artists. The exhibit opened at the start of Women’s History Month & is a collaboration between the Office of Arts and Culture, Arts Commission & Commission on the Status of Women. “The exhibition gives us insight into the diverse creative processes of women in our communities,” said Aimee Shapiro, executive director of the Office of Arts and Culture. “Visitors can view the artwork throughout the Caldwell Gallery, read the artists’ statements and discover what personal meaning the work holds for them.”

County Participates in Resilience Planning Project
The County of San Mateo in partnership with local cities is working on the Peninsula Resilience Planning (PREP) project to study how natural hazards and climate change will harm our communities and to plan for a safer and more resilient future. Residents are invited to attend community workshops to learn about the PREP project and share thoughts and experiences on flooding, wildfire, earthquakes, landslides, extreme heat and other severe weather or natural hazards. Workshops will be held online on March 13 and April 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in English and Spanish.

Student Art Contest Features San Mateo County Agriculture
In a first for the San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner and Agriculture/Weights and Measures Department, student artists grades 6th to 12th are invited to submit entries for the annual Crop Report. Published by the County's Agriculture/Weights and Measures Department, the Crop Report is distributed throughout the state to local government agencies, universities and industry leaders and civic organizations. Entries must be representative of agriculture and crop production in San Mateo County. Deadline for entries is April 26, 2024.

County, Office of Ed Honored for Youth Leadership Program
The Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) Leadership Program, a joint effort between the County of San Mateo’s Sustainability Department and San Mateo County Office of Education, is being honored with a Sustainable San Mateo County award. The distinction spotlights the unique approach the County of San Mateo, Office of Education and partners have taken to empower students in a new way of thinking about the environment and sustainability. The YCA Leadership Program is the first of its kind in California & engages high school students in a seven-month program that focuses on climate science, community action and leadership development.

County Health Offers Free In-Home Test Kits for STIs
San Mateo County residents may participate in a free screening program for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which offers in-home test kits through the mail and on online portal for confidential access to test results and other information. Working with the California Department of Public Health, San Mateo County Health is participating in the TakeMeHome program, which makes the full resources of testing laboratories and patient support from the local health department available to eligible residents in the privacy of their homes. In addition to participating in the TakeMeHome program, County Health’s STI/HIV program offers low-cost in-person testing without appointments.
