Supervisors to Hold Study Session on Revenue Loss
Concerned over the potential loss of a key revenue source that may threaten vital safety-net services, County Executive Mike Callagy recommends the Board of Supervisors hold a special study session. The potential deficit is fueled by possible cutbacks in what’s known as in-lieu Vehicle License Fees, a form of property tax on the ownership of motor vehicles. “We are short $69 million,” Callagy said. “This is something we’re working with our (state) legislators on. That would be a significant blow to this County, and it only grows every year.”

County Names Aimee Shapiro Director of Arts and Culture
The County of San Mateo announced that Aimee Shapiro will serve as the executive director of the San Mateo County Office of Arts and Culture. Shapiro comes to the County from Stanford University's Anderson Collection where she served as director of programming and engagement, working with artists, performers, students and the local community. Now she brings her energy and enthusiasm for the creative arts to the County, where she will play a central role in shaping the San Mateo County Arts Commission’s strategic plan.

County Libraries Celebrates Black History Month
San Mateo County Libraries this February celebrates Black History Month around the national theme, African Americans and the Arts, with programming for all ages. Youth and teen events at County Libraries commemorate the accomplishments of Black artists who used their art as a platform to fight for racial and social justice. A slate of workshops, films, panels and author talks are offered for adults, including a virtual moderated discussion Friday, Feb. 23, celebrating the achievements of local Black and African American residents.

Some County Parks Remain Closed After Severe Weather
County Parks with downed trees and overly saturated ground from heavy rain remain closed for visitor safety. Closed parks are currently Quarry Park, Huddart Park and Wunderlich Park. Openings may be delayed to allow assessment of road, trail and facility conditions. County Park officials recommend checking San Mateo County Parks advisories before visiting any park to keep current with conditions. County Ag Warns of Recent Surge in Fruit Fly Infestations
With Lunar New Year celebrations and the custom of sharing fruit to bring good fortune, the County's Department of Agriculture is tabling at local festivities to remind residents to not carry fruit from quarantined areas due to an unusually high number of invasive fruit fly detections this season. There are currently quarantines throughout the state, including nearby infestations in Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Sacramento counties. Department of Agriculture staff will be on hand Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Redwood City Lunar New Year Festival with information on how to help protect local fruits and vegetables from invasive fruit flies.

County to Host Public Service Career Fair For Veterans
Veterans, military personnel and their families interested in careers in public service are invited to meet with more than 40 local employers at a career fair on Friday, March 1, in Redwood City. The fair offers free career counseling, resume reviews and professional headshots to job seekers as well as an opportunity for networking and fostering connections and collaborations among individuals with shared experiences and goals. “We want to help connect veterans and their families to organizations that will encourage them to continue to serve their country and communities,” said Claire Cunningham, director of the Human Services Agency.
