Public Invited to Share Needs at Listening Sessions
The County of San Mateo is conducting a series of listening sessions to hear from residents about community needs in four key areas: housing and homelessness, emergency preparedness, children and families and mental health. Information gathered will help inform the Board of Supervisors on how local Measure K tax dollars should be allocated. The last two sessions of the series culminates this week in San Mateo tonight, Aug. 24, and Daly City tomorrow, Aug. 25. For those unable to attend, the deadline to take a confidential online survey offered in multiple languages has been extended through Aug. 28.

County Health Provides West Nile Information & Resources
The San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District is responding to the presence of West Nile virus in the region. While the risk of being infected with the virus in San Mateo County is currently low, San Mateo County Health reminds residents that many other parts of the state have higher risk and that the best way to prevent infection is to protect yourself from mosquito bites when spending time outdoors and traveling. Residents can report biting mosquitoes by calling (650) 344-8592 or submitting a service request online.

Applications Open for Youth Climate Ambassador Program
San Mateo County’s Youth Climate Ambassador Program has opened applications for the next cohort of this 7-month program (October 2023 - April 2024). All ninth through 12th grade students who live in San Mateo County are eligible to apply. Participants build their knowledge of climate change, explore various climate solutions and develop a final project to create positive, environmental change within their school or local community. Applications are open now and close at midnight on Friday, Sept. 15.

Seats Still Open for County's Civics 101 Academy
Registration for the annual Civics 101 Academy is open through Aug. 28 with space still available for more participants. Civics 101 is an opportunity to hear from County leaders and departments and learn about County programs, services, finances, and initiatives. Civics 101 will be held on nine consecutive Wednesday evenings at the Regional Operation Center in Redwood City, 6 to 8:30 p.m., from Aug. 30 through Oct. 25. Sessions include a K-9 demonstration, mock trial on Justice System night and a hike at a County park with a ranger. Register here.

County Libraries Offer Mental Health First Aid Training
San Mateo County Libraries is now offering in-person Mental Health First Aid trainings to the public. Participants will learn about the most prevalent mental health and substance use crises experienced in the United States, as well as how to safely identify potential issues and implement an action plan when helping someone who’s experiencing a crisis. The free course will be provided in person at the Millbrae, Belmont, Half Moon Bay and San Carlos libraries. Each course is eight hours and will be offered in four-hour sessions over two days. County Elections Division Seeks Vote Center Staff
The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Vote Center Trainers to assist in the upcoming March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. Duties include training on San Mateo County elections procedures, how to use Vote Center equipment, Vote Center set-up, and voter assistance. Vote Center Training is tentatively expected to begin Jan. 3, 2024. Those hired can expect to work for approximately nine weeks including on-site job training, teaching classes, and working in the Elections Division office.
