Recommended Budget Approved by Supervisors
Following three days of public hearings, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a two-year Recommended Budget totaling $7.7 billion for the next two fiscal years. “We are investing taxpayer dollars in programs and services that help people experiencing homelessness find permanent housing, supports children and families, and continues the transformation of mental health care,” said Dave Pine, president of the Board of Supervisors. The Board will hold hearings in September on a revised final budget.

Supervisors to Vote on New Social Services Director
San Mateo County Supervisors will consider confirming Claire Cunningham as the next director of the Human Services Agency. County Executive Mike Callagy appointed Cunningham following an extensive process that, as the final step, goes to the Board of Supervisors on July 11 for confirmation. “My initial goal is to complete the agency’s transition out of the pandemic era and into the future,” Cunningham said. “Human Services is uniquely positioned within County government because it plays a crucial role in addressing each of the Board of Supervisors’ four key priorities: housing our residents, equity, children and families, and emergency preparedness.”

County Supervisors to Study Tenant Issues, Protections
San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting July 10 to learn about tenant issues in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County and potential new protections to help prevent homelessness, sanction harassment of tenants and aid those with criminal records in finding housing. County staff, including from the County Attorney's Office, will inform the Board about potential rental protections. The Board will not vote on any proposal at the July 10 meeting but may provide staff with direction, including bringing back an ordinance to consider at a later date.

Back to School Brings Reminder to Get Vaccinated
San Mateo County Health recently posted announcements reminding parents and guardians to make sure their children’s vaccinations and health screenings required for school and childcare are up to date for the upcoming school year. Children in California are required to receive certain immunizations and health screenings to attend school. County Health provides information on the “well-child” health screenings, required immunizations needed to attend school, tuberculosis risk assessments, oral health screenings, and options for children without health insurance.

Sheriff's Office Hosts First Fireworks Buyback Event
At a recent anonymous fireworks buyback, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office collected nearly 400 pounds of fireworks. The goal of the event was to cut down the illegal use of fireworks throughout San Mateo County by collecting fireworks from residents for safe disposal in exchange for cash. The first of its kind in San Mateo County, the buyback "was intended to give people an opportunity to turn in their fireworks and help make everyone’s holiday safer," said Sheriff Christina Corpus. "I want to thank Supervisor Warren Slocum for his support in making this such a successful event.”

Artists Wanted to Create San Mateo County Parks Posters
In celebration of the San Mateo County Park Foundation’s 25th anniversary and San Mateo County Parks’ centennial, the Parks Foundation is seeking three artists to design a poster for Memorial Park, Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve. Three selected artists will receive a $2,500 commission for their work. Open to all professional and emerging artists, with priority given to those who live or work in San Mateo County, the goal is to engage the arts community and create lasting designs that capture and celebrate the essence of each park. Deadline to apply is July 14.
