County, Sheriff's Office to Host Gun Buyback Event
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office with the County of San Mateo, local law enforcement agencies and Citizens for San Mateo County Gun Buyback will hold an anonymous Gun Buyback event at the North County Courthouse Parking Lot in South San Francisco Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The San Mateo County Gun Buyback Program is funded by a partnership between the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, which approved a grant of up to $208,000 in Measure K Reserves, $100,000 from the Sheriff’s Office and more than $67,000 raised by Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback.

County Health Honors Mental Health Month With Events
The County of San Mateo is celebrating May as Mental Health Month with special events that include wellness walks, poetry readings, resource fairs and more. The goal is to increase awareness and inspire action to reduce stigma against those with mental health and substance use conditions. Each year, County Health’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services’ Office of Diversity and Equity partners with local agencies and community members to promote free events that are open to the public. This year’s statewide theme for Mental Health Month is “#Share4MH.”

Courts Offer Online Pay Tool for Traffic Citation Infractions
San Mateo County Superior Court is now using MyCitations, an online option for people challenged with paying fines related to infractions. The release of MyCitations for public use corresponds with San Mateo Superior Court’s ongoing effort to increase access to justice for all who use the Court. The tool allows court users to look up citations online, answer a series of questions and submit a request to the court for a possible reduction in the amount owed based on their financial situation. Users can also request a payment plan, more time to pay, or community service. This new option allows the public to make requests without the need to appear in court.

County Recognizes May as CalFresh Awareness Month
During CalFresh Awareness Month this May, the Human Services Agency Outreach Team will be hosting a series of events and activities to raise awareness about the supplemental nutrition program and encourage eligible individuals and families to apply for benefits to increase their monthly food budget. Eligibility is based on income and household size. “Access to healthy and nutritious food is critical to the well-being of our community,” said Navjeet Singh, director of Economic Self-Sufficiency in the Human Services Agency. “We are committed to doing our part to make sure that everyone who is eligible for CalFresh benefits receives them.”

Crews Install Mirada Road Pedestrian Bridge
The new Mirada Road Pedestrian Bridge in Miramar along the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail was installed Thursday, May 4, marking a major milestone in completing this Department of Public Works project. The aluminum bridge was delivered in two segments and required a 159,000 pound eight-axle crane for installation. Work to build a stairwell down to the beach is slated to begin mid-June. The detour route along Highway 1 is still open and will remain accessible until the pedestrian bridge officially opens. The beach area, however, has been restored and is open to the public.
